On May 1, Meryl Streep will grace us with Miranda Priestly’s presence once more in the sequel to the Devil Wears Prada. And while seemingly every brand on the planet has been trying to cash in on the franchise (I’ve seen everything from themed tweezers to an AMC popcorn bag), two clothing brands in particular are going head to head for the best Devil Wears Prada collection: Old Navy and Walmart’s Scoop.

Old Navy’s version, released on April 6 and ranging from $20 to $54, consists of T-shirts, sweatshirts and Andy Sachs-approved satchels. Walmart’s version, meanwhile, which opened up for pre-sale on April 10 and ranges from $16 to $54, will drop in full on April 20 under the Scoop umbrella.

A bit broader than the Old Navy collection, it houses everything from classic red heels like in the movie poster to jeans, skirts and power suits—and preorders are selling out fast.

So which collection do I think would get two nods from Miranda and which one would get the dreaded pursed lips?

My nods go to Old Navy, if only because it’s so on-the-nose. There’s an *actual* cerulean blue sweater, for pete’s sakes! One can’t help but appreciate the lengths Zac Posen & co. went to to not only honor the 2006 flick, but its beloved characters of Andy, Miranda and even Nigel, who gets his own bag. (And just like his character, it’s kind of the best.)

The Walmart Scoop collection, while far more wearable (are we really aspiring to wear the frumpy old cable-knit Miranda once ripped to shreds or is it just a cheeky nod?), doesn’t have nearly as strong of a viewpoint.

Sure, it’s more modern (I pulled the trigger on these barrel jeans) but which character can you see wearing, say, the lace-trimmed shorts or the peplum denim top? Miranda? Andy? Neither strike me as likely. *Maybe* Emily would try them, but in 2026, I’m not wholly convinced.

Based on what has been released thus far, this feels more like a collection of trendy things (I see you, fringe skirt) as opposed to a any sort of real tribute.

Andy’s infamous cerulean sweater gets its due in this cable-knit, “SoSoft” replica.

This workhorse of a bag is bound to be an office hero, and the chocolately faux suede will transition beautifully from summer to fall.

The best part of these wide-leg jeans might just be the tiny printed stiletto on the hip pocket. They also come in regular, tall and petite (!).

Everyone needs a classic button-down, and this one features a fun little corset at the back. Ooh la la!

I don’t consider myself a crafty person. I can’t paint or draw to save my life, and I’m not particularly great at building anything. Halloween costume ideas, however, are something I have a real knack for. After all, recreating fashion looks is something I do almost every day. As a shopping editor, I’m constantly trying to find things that look like other things. Sometimes, it’s a shirt that will fit a runway trend I’m writing about. Other times, it’s a dress that looks just like one a celebrity wore (only cheaper). This particular skillset spills over into my personal style, too: I’m inspired by things others wear all the time. (This fall leather blazer ensemble was a total homage to ’90s Winona Ryder).

When it comes to my Halloween inspo, it starts with an image or a video clip. “I’ve got a sweater like that,” I’ll think. “I could totally make it into something.” Other times, it starts with the costume itself: I’ll spot something that calls to me and build an outfit around it. (This year’s idea (stay tuned!) happened the second way.)

Before the big reveal however, I’m taking a look back at some of my best recreations thus far, from Wednesday Addams to Courtney Love. Sensing a theme? You’re not wrong — I tend to gravitate toward strange and unusual women (a.k.a. my fictional spirit animals.)

My Best Halloween Costume Ideas

1. Lydia Deetz, 2020

I went all in on Halloween for 2020 after spotting—and falling for—this Leg Avenue Lydia Deetz costume online. A year of being cooped up at home courtesy of that pesky little global pandemic that shall not be named meant that I needed to do something fun, and well, this was it. The dress and the wig were store-bought, but I free-handed the ghoulish makeup using the picture on the left as a reference. For extra creativity points, I even made a photo of Beetlejuice my Zoom background while showing off my look online.

2. Cruella De Vil, 2021

The pressure was on to top my 2020 look in 2021. Though I typically like to pull my inspo from the my two favorite eras (the ‘80s and the ‘90s), I made an exception in for 2021’s Cruella after spotting this chic little costume. After all, I’ve been called “Cruella” a time or two for my own fashion choices, so why not embrace it, right? The hardest part of this one was getting the wig to sit just so, but once I got it on, I thought it suited me quite well.

3. Robert Palmer Girl, 2023

2023’s look was one I had been toying with for awhile. A throwback to the era of my birth, this was an homage not only to the fair-skinned, red-lipped babes from Robert Palmer’s “Addicted to Love” video, but also to a simpler time, when music videos, and not TikTok voiceovers, ruled the world. It was fairly easy to recreate: I started with a plain black bodycon dress and added some tights and a cheap little studded belt from Amazon. The two main elements — the guitar and the makeup — were things I already had at my disposal, however. (Ah, the perks of having a professional guitarist for a boyfriend!) This one also involved some performance art, since I actually did the dance from the video.

4. Marilyn Monroe, 2022

I had no intention of dressing up as the late, great Marilyn Monroe in 2022. But when this little French Connection frock popped up on my screen mid-scroll and gave me visions of a modern-day bombshell, I knew I didn’t really have a choice. Being that I’m only about 5 feet 2 inches tall, it suited me far better than a replica of Monroe’s actual Gentlemen Prefer Blondes getup, the hem of which would’ve almost certainly dragged the ground, and I figured I could actually wear this dress again at some point after playing dress-up. Naturally, Amazon provided the wig, the gloves, and the (faux) diamonds.

5. Sally, 2012

This was a last-minute DIY that I was particularly proud of. With (literally) nothing to wear to my friend’s Halloween party, I desperately looked around for something I could create. I was listening to a lot of Fiona Apple at this time, and her cover of “Sally’s Song” from the Nightmare Before Christmas had a particularly strong hold on me in 2012, so it’s unsurprising that I would eventually turn to Sally as my muse. 90 percent of this look consisted of eyeliner (which I always have an abundance of). I generously drew it all over my arm, chest and cheeks. Having successfully recreated Sally’s stitches, I also drew on little extended lashes under my eyes and used some blue eyeshadow to deaden my face a bit before piling on the rouge and drawing on a little Cupid’s doll mouth of lipstick. The dress didn’t matter so much to me (in fact, I think I borrowed it from a friend who thought it might work for the occasion) as long as I got the makeup right—and I have to say, I think I nailed it.

6. Courtney Love, 2019

Technically, this one wasn’t a Halloween costume (I wore it for my friend Sam’s rock-and-roll-themed baby shower), but I still think it’s still one of the best looks I’ve come up with to date. Given my affinity for Hole, I chose to go as punk rock queen and all-around badass, Courtney Love. I started with an inspo shot of her in a leopard coat, a black slip dress and a pair of ripped up fishnets and went to work. It came together quickly enough—I already owned a lookalike coat. I picked up a navy slip dress from Topshop and a pair of tights, added a cheap crown and a blonde wig, and boom! A star was born.

7. Wednesday Addams, 2016

After interviewing the Queen of Halloween, The Girl Next Door’s Holly Madison, about her approach to dressing up in 2016, I decided to take her advice and fashion my look that year after someone I already kinda’ looked like. And considering that I was still dying my hair jet black in 2016, Wednesday Addams wasn’t much of a stretch. I found a generic black collared dress to complete the look, but for me, it was the braids, the black lipstick and the kohl-lined eyes that really drove this one home.

8. Playboy Bunny, 2006

I admittedly wasn’t very creative with my costumes as a college student at Michigan State University. As Mean Girl’s Cady Heron so aptly explained, “In Girl World, Halloween is the one day a year when a girl can dress up like a total slut and no other girls can say anything else about it.” She wasn’t wrong, and I was definitely an active participant of that mindset in my early ‘20s. As a result, most of my looks were rather played out, to the say the least (basically, pick a thing and put “sexy” in front of it, and I’ve probably been that), but I really went for the gusto in 2006 with my stint as a Playboy Bunny. To this day, I’m still in awe that I actually pranced down the street in little more than a black bodysuit, a pair of ears and some tights. (At least I was confident?) A few years later, I recycled this look, albeit with a skirt over my bottom, so it actually got double usage—and a spot on my list.

9. Nirvana Cheerleader, 2013

They say necessity is the mother of invention, and that was certainly the case with the dead Nirvana cheerleader costume I came up with the night before my office costume party in 2013. As a broke 20-something, I was so poor I couldn’t really afford to buy a costume (not that I had time to, anyway, after waiting until the very last possible second). But suddenly, I was struck by a flash of inspiration when I somehow realized that I already had all the makings of a dead Nirvana cheerleader from the “Smells Like Teen Spirit” video. I threw on a pleated black skirt and a simple black tank top from my closet and crafted a quick “A” for anarchy with roll of red packing tape I had in my drawer. After a quick run to Walgreens, I also had a pair of pom-poms as the icing on the cake. The next day, I proudly took home the award for “scariest costume.”

10. Alex Owens, 2018

In 2018, I worked part-time at a salon, so I tapped the available resources at my disposal (read: my lovely friends and stylists Rachel Miller and Mikayla Fratterigo) to create this look around Alex’s hairdo. Thinking back on Holly Madison’s advice, I chose someone I not only sort of resembled (we’re both brunette, close enough), but someone who owned a sweater that looked like one I already had. I threw it on, the ladies worked their teasing magic and my Halloween costume was complete.

Years ago, someone told me that everyone that works in the fashion industry has a dirty little secret: They wear the same thing over and over. According to my mystery source, those in the sartorial know invest in one pricey black basic that they wear on repeat — it’s just that you just don’t notice because of the different ways they style it. After investing in the Scarlet wrap Abercrombie skort ($60), I’ve found myself doing the same, pairing it with every top, cardigan, jacket and sweater I own.

If you’re looking to make the most of your closet, all it takes is a bit of creativity. Your hero piece can vary (perhaps you’re more of a trousers kind of gal?), but I chose this skort because it’s comfortable (I live in Florida, where it’s still 85 degrees, so pants are out), versatile, and easy to wash — this is key, since you’ll be wearing it a lot. (Size sold out? There are also plenty of other options available.)

I will say that I do think restyling a bottom is a bit easier than restyling a top, since they tend to be less conspicuous. From there, it’s as easy as switching out your tank, tee, or sweater and experimenting with your favorite outerwear, shoes, and accessories. Check out what I mean below.

1. With a Cropped Trench

Step 1: Throw on your skort. Step 2: Grab a plain white tee. Step 3: Add a clutch piece of outerwear. Step 4: Pile on your favorite jewelry. I went with another Abercrombie favorite (this cropped trench in an XXS is the only one I’ve tried that doesn’t completely drown my upper body) and a trusty necklace set. (Awe Inspired’s Season of the Witch collection is a personal fave.)

2. With a Contrast-Trim Cardi

A quick switcheroo of the top, shoes and bag and I’m officially resort-ready (which is good, ’cause again, Florida). This gifted contrast trim cardi, which is every bit designer quality, is only left in a leopard print, but I’ve included several lookalikes below.

3. With a Burgundy Shell

The one thing missing in the looks above? A pop of color. I remedied that by incorporating *the* it hue of the season (it’s burgundy, in case you missed the memo) into my top and bag choices. And P.S.? This faux leather shell cost me less than $20. I also added some shiny black boots to match the sheen of the top.

4. With a Cozy Sweater

You know that gorgeous *insert your favorite here* crewneck/mockneck/turtleneck/off-the-shoulder sweater that was too good to pass up on sale but looks so utterly blasé with your jeans? This is the exact bottom you’ve been waiting for to show it off. I grabbed this Treasure & Bond beauty from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale (it’s currently discounted again to as low as $25), but really, any old jumper will do.

5. With a Knit Halter

This top is from a new-to-me brand, Love, Bonito, and leans into the vest trend that’s been exploding all over every H&M, J.Crew and Old Navy in America. The knitting is extremely fine, which makes it feel ultra-luxe, but it still pairs rather nicely with my casual skort, which is made of a basic polyester and elastane blend.

6. With a Casual Sweatshirt

This look requires the least effort of all. I literally plucked my new favorite H&M sweatshirt from the top of my growing pile of clothes to put away (lay off me, I’m a busy gal) and added a pair of black booties. While this particular graphic is currently sold out, any old crewneck or hoodie will do. (This Paris sweatshirt, $30, is a great substitute.)

Every so often, a show comes along that represents the fashion of a generation. In the late ‘90s, it was Sex and the City. In the late aughts, Gossip Girl. While the world might have pegged …And Just Like That to be the crowning sartorial jewel of the late 2020s, SATC’s lifeblood, costume designer Patricia Field (you might also recognize her work from The Devil Wears Prada), left Carrie Bradshaw behind and moved onto more stylish pastures with Netflix’s Emily in Paris. She made the right move: By the end of its first season, Emily in Paris fashion had effectively become the new style standard. Now in season 4, Field has been succeeded by Marilyn Fitoussi per W, but the show’s sartorial influence remains strong.

The Parisian gang of Mindy, Cami, Emily and Sylvie returned for another dose of wardrobe inspo on Aug. 15, and after binging every episode in less than 48 hours, I’ve broken down their looks into eight trends that are sure to set the style tone of fall 2024 — and beyond. From the cast’s head-turning monochrome getups to the return of the beret, here are the fads you’ll be scrambling for come fall. (And ahead of Emily in Paris season 4, part 2, which returns on Sept. 12.)

Emily in Paris Fashion Trends

1. Monochrome

Emily has always been a fan of color, and the trend continues in a very noticeable way for season 4. From Mindy’s cobalt blue mini dress to Emily’s head-to-toe canary yellow getup (see above), it’s all about monochromes. A standout moment for the trend? Emily’s bold blue suit, which adds to the drama of her surroundings as she visits Claude Monet’s breathtaking garden.

2. Masculine Suiting

Season 4 marks a bit of a departure from Emily’s typical “girlie-girl” aesthetic as we start to see her incorporating more masculine suiting and severe hairstyles into her look. The change is seemingly reflective of her character’s growth: The structured suit-and-tie grouping lends an edge that’s matches her newfound steel in matters of the heart, work, et. al.

3. Stripes

While the polka dots that reigned supreme in season 3 of EIP are still very much present in season 4, stripes are giving them a run for their money as Emily’s pattern du jour. They’re strewn across the red-and-black top she wears to a department store beauty launch. They’re peeking out from beneath her layered vest at lunch (see below). They’re on display in the red-and-white blazer she wears on the kiss cam with Alfie. Frankly, It isn’t hard to see the pattern here (see what I did there?).

4. Layered Looks

Emily is no stranger to mixing and matching unexpected designs, and in season 4, she’s taking things one step further, mixing and matching her textures (and adding an extra layer of warmth in the process). While her vest-and-button-down combo is undoubtedly comprised of two separate pieces, there are plenty of pre-layered options you can pick up that make nailing the look a cinch (perfect if you’re a lazy dresser, like me).

5. Burgundy

Buffy may have worn it first, but Emily is living proof that burgundy has risen from its 90s grave. And you don’t have to wait for a trickle-down effect to snag it: It’s currently available in your garden variety mini skirts, croc boots, bags, cargos … need I go on?

6. Berets

Naturally, a show about Paris is bound to have a beret or two —there’s at least one nod to the French cap each season — but it’s been a minute since Emily and company leaned into the chic accessory this hard. (Seriously, I counted three in the season 4 press shots alone). There’s probably good reason for that: As Refinery 29 points out, the trend has recently spread beyond European borders, with Aussies jumping onboard for their May fashion week.

7. Ultra-Oversized Coats

If Emily’s season 4 outerwear is any indicator, there’s just one feature you should be looking for when it comes to an “it” topper this season: It should be large enough to swallow you whole. The vivacious brunette was spotted in several ultra-oversized coats, all of which she was practically drowning in. (See her Isabel Marant Carolina teddy coat (above, $531), or her multicolored faux fur Missoni getup.

8. Ruffle Details

Perhaps in contrast to Emily’s more masculine suiting, ruffle details were popping up all over in season 4, from the necklines of her Chanel-inspired blouses to the plackets of Cami’s button-downs. As one of the more wearable trends to come out of Emily in Paris, I foresee this fad sticking with us for some time — and I’m perfectly OK with that.

2024 Emily in Paris Collaborations

In honor of season 4, several brands have created special Emily in Paris fashion (and drink!) collaborations that will make it easier than ever to mimic the show’s heroine — and I got a sneak peek at them all.

• Diff Eyewear x Emily in Paris: Are you an Emily? A Cami? A Sylvie? Doesn’t matter — there’s a Diff pair of sunnies for you. The hot pink Emilys above are just a smidge too large for my peanut-sized head (I think I might have better luck with the Camilles, based on the frames), but I love the bold pop of color they provide an otherwise basic black ensemble. (Emily would definitely approve) Each pair also comes with the most darling beret (also sold separately), which reads “C’est chic” across the side — accurate.

• Maison Lillet x Emily in Paris: I admittedly wasn’t familiar with apertifs prior to receiving this press package, but after tried both the blanc and rosé versions of Lillet’s Emily in Paris collab, let me just say: big fan. Huge. According to my friend Janice, who knows a thing or two about the subject (she’s a director of national accounts for a wine company who’s been featured in Tasting Panel magazine), an apertif is a dry, low-alcohol spirit that’s typically served before a meal, as it’s thought to increase your appetite. While it can be bitter on its own, it’s f*cking delicious when paired with champagne (think the best spritz of your life — it’s completely replaced my mimosa fetish, since it’s less sugary-sweet and far more balanced), and according to Jan, Lillet is great in margs, too.
  
• Vahdam Tea x Emily in Paris: With flavors like La Vie en Rose, Ingenue Violet and Voila! Vanilla, Vahdam’s Emily collection is packed with all the flavors of Paris, but if you can’t choose just one, you’d do well to opt for the assortment pack. It’s got nine different flavors packaged together in a calendar-slim pack that won’t take up any room in your cupboard but will make tea time infinitely more mod.

I am not a sneaker girlie. Protest though my bunions might, I have always valued style (*cough, cough,* heels) over comfort when it comes to footwear. But that was before COVID, when sneakers practically became a prerequisite to fashion. And you know what they say: If you can’t beat ‘em? Join ‘em!

Now, don’t get me wrong—hell will likely freeze over before I’ll ever be caught dead in a chunky dad-style shoe. But slowly, surely, a few (highly selective) pairs of white sneakers have begun to make their way into my wardrobe. After some practice, I’ve finally figured out how to wear white sneakers in a way that reads ultra-chic—not sloppy. Check out the evidence below.

1. With Cargo Pants + a White Tee

(+ an awkwardly limp hand)

Cargo pants are yet another trend that I would normally balk at—and if we’re talking about the ultra wide-leg variety, forget it. This Superdown pair ($72) caught my eye because of the more tailored design. See that drawstring at the bottom? It allows for a cinched fit, so they’re not draping over the sneakers in the typically slovenly manner. They’ll look even better on tall gals, too, since technically, they’re supposed to hit a bit above the ankle. (What can I say? When you’re 5 feet 2 inches tall, you make due.)

While you could theoretically wear this look with any old white tee, I’m wearing the Goldie organic boy tee, which doesn’t shrink in the wash (I’ve run mine through the machine about a billion times now) and has a lightweight feel. (Psst: It’s also a favorite of Gwynnie’s.)  

As for the sneakers, I’ve got a few white pairs in rotation. I’m obsessed with Kizik’s Limas, $109, which are worth every penny for their ability to easily slide on and off without needing to touch the laces or heels, and adidas’s Stan Smiths, $100, which have extra padding at the back for my extra-sensitive heels. The ones featured here are the SeaVees Monterey platforms ($95) that the company sent me to try. Though I don’t recommend them for über-long hikes (they do start to scrape the back of the foot after an hour+ of uninterrupted walking), they’re absolutely perfect for running errands and go with just about anything. (See the evidence below.)

2. With a Sundress + a Denim Jacket

This is probably my favorite way to wear white sneakers. While you can throw them on with a dress of any length, I personally think they look best with minis. (The polka-dot one I’m wearing, linked below, is a freaking steal at $12.) Heels usually help to make my short little legs look longer, whereas sneakers tend to cut them off. The shorter hemline of this dress helps to compensate for that, giving me some of my length back.

If you live in a warmer climate, you might not need the jacket ($199), but after living in Chicago for nearly 15 years, I’m sensitive to the fact that “spring’ doesn’t always equate to “warmth”—plus it adds a little something to the look, n’est-ce pas?

3. With a Sweatshirt + Shorts

If you’re the type to get-up-and-go, it doesn’t get more low-effort than this. And yet, for all its ease, a lightweight sweatshirt with a basic graphic, like this one (thank you for the freebie, Vineyard Vines!), will give you an almost country club feel when worn with your favorite pair of shorts (I’m a Joe’s girl) and your best white kicks. She’s what we like to call “sporty chic” — never mind the fact that you’re more likely to spot a unicorn in the wild than witness me actually playing a sport.

Tonight marked the season finale of Feud: Capote vs. the Swans, bringing the fictionalized retelling of the real-life cold war between Truman Capote and his high-flying society birds to an end. While there’s been no shortage of talent in the miniseries’ eight-episode run (Naomi Watts! Calista Flockhart! Diane Lane! Chloë Sevigny! Demi Moore! Molly Ringwald!), I’m trumpeting its swan song with an homage to its brightest leading lady of all: the fashion.

With costume designer Lou Eyrich at the helm, the show has successfully reimagined the style of women like Vogue editor Babe Paley (Watts), once hailed as one of the best-dressed women in the world, and Lee Radziwill (Flockhart), a.k.a. Jackie Kennedy Onassis’s little sister,

Sans for Capote’s famed black-and-white ball, for which his frenemies brought out the style big guns, the show’s looks weren’t particularly ostentatious. They also weren’t particularly trendy—Babe herself once declared within the glossy pages of Vogue that “tradition” was her taste. They were, however, a nod to a bygone era of classic elegance from which we could all learn a thing or two.

Below, the five fashion notes I’m taking from Babe, Lee, Nancy “Slim” Keith (Lane), Lucy Douglas “C.Z.” Guest (Sevigny) and Ann Woodward (Moore).

1. Statement Earrings Are a Must

The biggest thing that struck me about these ladies’ style, particularly when it came to Babe, wasn’t their exquisite gowns, their luxurious coats (which were very fine, indeed) or even their ultra-high coifs—it was their jewels. More specifically? Their statement earrings. Ear baubles stole the show in nearly every scene, from Babe’’s oversized studs and dangling stunners to Lee’s ultra-chunky hoops. Based on the show, not one of the swans favored the wimpy little pieces we call jewelry today: These things had weight. And they were absolutely fabulous.

2. Unique Necklines Add Intrigue

I quickly noticed Babe’s penchant for an intriguing neckline—something that was very much in line with her real-life fashion ethos. As she wrote in Vogue, “In clothes, I look not only for line and movement, but also for delicate seams, pretty linings, integrity of detail.” That attention to detail is evident in almost all of Babe’s garments, starting first and foremost with her unique collars—just. check out the the high split neck of her cream Zac Posen ball gown!

3. Buttons Aren’t Just for Function

Buttons aren’t just for fastening, girls—oh, no. In the world of the swans, they also serve as a stunning accessories. Not just any old button will do, however. The ones seen on Babe & co’s outerwear, dresses and the like are hefty, oversized and super shiny—all the better to make them really pop against Lee’s black pinafore dress and Babe’s pastel pink cardigan.

4. Pearls Go with Everything

The character of C.Z. Guest can often be seen with a strand of pearls around her neck, proving once and for all just how versatile the gems really are. While I tend to think of them for special occasions, C.Z.’s character thinks nothing of throwing them on with a simple button-down—and she looks all the smarter for it. The socialite’s pearls were undoubtedly real, but you don’t have to spend an arm and a leg to get the look—I found quite a few fakes that look just as posh below.

5. Special Occasions Call for *Drama*

Hands down, the show’s fashion pièce de résistance is Truman’s black-and-white ball. Zac Posen custom made each of the ladies’ ensembles for the fictionalized event, hand-beading Lee’s metallic gown, adding a silk floral appliqué to the back of C.Z.’s Duchesse satin corset and embroidering a crystal and feather show-stopper for Capote’s mother (Jessica Lange). As for Babe, she’s a vision in a swan-like feather cape dipped in silver. The one thing all their looks have in common? Drama, drama and more drama. These ladies know how to dress to impress, and it all starts with a bit of theater. Maybe it comes in the form of a sweeping chiffon sleeve, like that of Ann Woodward’s, or maybe it’s a jaw-dropping black-and-white balloon cape, à la Slim Keith. Whatever it is, if it’s not performative, it’s not gonna fly with the swans—period.

One of my biggest regrets about leaving Chicago is that I never got to meet Jen Worman—the powerhouse blogger behind Red Soles & Red Wine. Worman has a keen eye for style—take, for example, the chic men’s Amazon ski sweater she cleverly turned into the perfect cardi—and a genius mix of high and low items on her page. Yes, you’ll find some aspirational things here (it will probably be a minute before I can cop her Dolce and Fendi bags), but you’ll also find her partnering with stores like Walmart or showing off $60 dresses that the rest of us can actually afford. We like a lot of the same brands, and I love that she talks about her age, too: Not only do I have no time for Gen Z fashion with its unending supply of crop tops and mom jeans, it’s so very, very refreshing to see a non 20-something straight up killing the game.

Kali Passiglia is more than just the creator of fashion blog In Spades (and my good friend Lauren’s big sis). While I’ve found plenty of shopping fodder on her account (I wholeheartedly trust her opinion on all things fashion and beauty, so when she says Victoria Beckham’s lipsticks are the only ones she’ll wear now, you best believe I’m ordering them, stat), she’s also a fashion educator. She regularly takes deep dives into the world of style with her “Fashion Friday” series, examining everything from new collaboration drops (she’s always first to know) to fashion house personnel shakeups and the tales behind their historical backgrounds. It’s incredibly interesting info for a style lover, and an absolute treat each time it hits my Stories.

Lydia Tomlinson is another creator who offers something a little more unique than just a wall of LTK picks. She actually teaches you how to dress—and how not to. With her simple fashion tutorial videos, she shows you the mistakes you may be making with your wardrobe, which range from unbalanced outfit proportions to color faux pas, and the simple sandwiching an balancing rules that can fix them. It’s like having a fashion professor on tap, right inside your phone. I also just find her accent oddly comforting?

Jefcoate’s account is more or less pure aspiration—girl definitely loves her designer labels—but isn’t that half the fun of fashion? Aspiring to recreate a certain look or wear a certain brand or find a certain item? Beyond the inspiration she provides, I love the way she unapologetically takes high-end couture (Gucci, Prada, Celine, the gang’s all here) and makes it her own. She’s got tattoos from head-to-toe, she lives and dies by her punk AF leather harness and her reel music is set to the soundtrack Echo & the Bunnymen over Beyoncé (hallelujah!)—and yet, she’s rocking upper class labels with the best of them (and doing it better, if I do say so myself).

On the opposite end of the style spectrum is Madison Messer, whose looks are incredibly accessible—just like the woman who puts them together. Messer is an open book, ready to tell you at a moment’s notice where her necklace stack is from (Electric Picks, FYI—she has her own collection with the brand that’s pretty dang cute), how much her filler dissolution hurt and what her family’s holiday celebration looked like in detail—and I couldn’t love her more for it. As for her fashion, you can expect everything from sleek and sophisticated to casual and sporty—and she’ll tell you where to get it all, on sale.

Hoover is so absolutely fucking fierce that she has her nightgowns hemmed, per her recent profile in Harper’s Bazaar. She’s witty (she recently sold a book about her quarantine musings to Simon & Schuster per the same profile), she’s popping up everywhere and her Instagram is full of insane-yet-chic ensembles, be they made of cotton candy or Chanel tweed. In short? I adore her and just about everything she puts on, too.

8. Beth Redmond

Redmond’s Instagram is highly curated, but I can’t help but swoon over what is there: Her looks are otherwordly. She’s also an art director who sees “fashion and art as interchangeable” (Same, Beth. Same.) and it shows. Her ensembles are a cacophony of color, textures and shapes, the likes of which I can only hope to emulate. Sigh.

If you know me and my penchant for bold, eccentric looks, you may be scratching your head at this one—Aylin’s aesthetic is full of neutrals and basics that are a far cry from my usual roster. But there’s something I truly admire about her ability to make everything look so…pulled together, from her outfits to her coffee bar to her suitcase accessories, all of which she manages to accomplish with simple finds from Amazon and the like that make you go, “Wait…why didn’t I use my toothbrush holder as a vase before?” The woman’s Target finds look like a Banana Republic catalog, for God’s sakes. HOW DOES SHE DO IT?

I’m not typically one to be bowled over by fashion collaborations. Adidas for Prada? I’ll keep the racing stripes away from my designer bags, thank you very much. The North Face x Gucci? Do you want me to barf now, or later? Yes, Balmain x Barbie was kind of amazing (and ahead of its time, given the current absolute, total domination of #Barbiecore), but for the most part, I find most of them to be subpar, at best. But that was before I laid my eyes on Coach x Tom Wesselmann.

If you’re not familiar with Wesselman’s work, it’s rather avant-garde, to say the least—you might even call it pornographic, with an entire series dedicated to “sensual” (read: nude) depictions of the female form between 1961 and 1973. While Coach kept things on the tamer side, choosing prints of ladies’ lips and cigarette smoke, over, say, a zoomed-in chest, or penis (both of which exist), it’s still far more bold than I’d expect from the brand—which is precisely why I love it so much.

On the the surface, the images by the American artist, who ranked among the likes of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtehnstein as a pioneer of the’’60s pop art movement, are hyper-provocative for a company synonymous with structured leather, ’90s logos and sweet florals. And yet, Stuart Vevers, who took the reigns as Coach’s creative director in 2013, easily draws a parallel between the two. “Like my collections for Coach, Tom Wesselmann’s work is inspired by the extraordinary found in the everyday and the universal references that bring us together,” he said in a press release. He added: “Sensory and joyful, our collaboration is a tribute to the sense of pleasure Tom found in the process of creating. I’m very honored to have worked with his family to bring it to life, and proud to share his work with a new generation.”

Though the 54-piece collection launched at the end of June, there’s still plenty of unique finds up for grabs, including this notebook that I literally haven’t stopped tracing with my fingers since it landed on my doorstep. There’s also this darling charm bracelet (make that an ankle bracelet for me, as it runs a bit large) that’s giving some serious Chanel vibes. As one might expect, the quality Coach has brought to each one is exceptional, right down to the glitter at the end of the rolled-up cigarette on the notebook’s cover (I suspect they’ll join the brand’s Legacy crossbody, which I’ve been carrying since 2012). More than that, however, the pieces are so cool and unique, I truly feel like I’ve invested in pieces of art—which, of course, I actually have.

When’s the last time you saw an outfit that stopped you dead in your tracks? For me, it was probably last March—before the pandemic hit. COVID-19 has affected nearly every aspect of our lives, with fashion being no exception. Sans for a few select Instagram accounts (I’ve been living for Beth Redmond and Sammi) and TV shows (Emily in Paris has been a sartorial life raft), my inspiration in the style department has felt severely lacking, with little that truly excites me. In fact, the biggest trends to come out of 2020 were athleisure (shocker), Crocs and tie-dye: three things I personally find heinous. While I’m completely aware that it’s a trivial complaint in light of everything else that’s going on, for someone like me, who thrives on the creativeness surrounding all things fashion, I can’t say that it hasn’t left me wanting.

To help myself snap out of the style sleepwalk it feels like I’ve all been on these last nine months and awaken my spirit, I’ve decided to kick 2021 off with a fashion mood board, if you will. The pieces below are all ones that made me feel something, be it joy, awe or intrigue. Some I already own (or will soon!) and others, I may never be able to afford in my lifetime, but they’ve inspired me, just the same. Here’s to dressing more boldly and creatively in the new year!

I’m a huge proponent of tattoos. Having gotten my first one at 17 (I’m up to nine…and counting!), I can safely say that these ink-based works of art have come a long way since the mid-aughts. Take color, for instance. Adding color to your tattoo used to be as simple as choosing your favorite hue, but over the past few years, the process has become so complex, it’s evolved into a style in and of itself. In fact, color tattoo designs have been hailed as one of the artform’s biggest trends.

According to tattoo artist Adam Villani, who spoke to StyleCaster last November, it’s one that’s not going anyway anytime soon, either. “By far, [2020’s] biggest trend is color,” he told the publication. “Color is so, so in.” He added, “We’re going to see so many new, creative uses of color,” noting that pastels, in particular, will be a dominant force in the world of tattoos.

So what makes these eye-catching pieces so different from the ink of yore? It’s all in the technique. From watercolor, which uses very few to no black or outlines, relying instead on gradual shading and shifts in color, to “hypercolor realism,” or “wildly realistic colored tattoos,” there’s no shortage of ways to bring these vibrant masterpieces to life. Some artists have even gone so far as to throw black light ink into the mix, so your tattoo will light up in the dark.

Of course, color tattoos aren’t for everyone—as those in the ink community know, there’s been much debate over how tattoos well created without strong linework will fare over time. Different skin types may also react adversely to certain colors. (Fellow eczema sufferers, for instance, may experience a bit more swelling with red ink than other palette choices.) Italian-based artist Debra Genchi’s (@debratist) work is inspired but nature, but it was me she left feeling inspired with this tiny jewel of a hummingbird she created. While the ornate colors along the stomach and wings would have been impressive enough, Genchi also found a way to use color to denote motion in the bird’s wings for a true masterpiece of a tattoo.

Poland’s own Andrey Lukovnikov (@lukonikovtattoo) was crafty enough to work not one, but two tattoo ideas into this floral seagull piece via double exposure—a photography term that sees one one image superimposed on top of another. He didn’t shirk on the color, either, using bright-but-realistic shades for every element of the piece—right down to the tags on the bird’s feet—that make it a head-turner, through and through.

Anyone who knows me knows I’m a sucker for all things Sesame Street (this tweet brings me endless amounts of joy), but that’s not why I chose Dublin artist @tomashblazczak’s cartoon magnus opus for my list. No, it was the true-to-life…er, true-to-muppet colors that really caught my eye. Every little hue—from the count’s purple hands to Ernie’s striped shirt—has been captured to a tee, and I, for one, am living for it.

This lion roars to life in a kaleidoscope of color thanks to the sheer talent of @amandabarretotattoo. Not only is this gorgeous artwork based in watercolor, it was actually a coverup, which, as any avid Ink Master viewer (*raises hand*) knows, can be quite tough to execute. This one was done so seamlessly, however, I’d be none the wiser without the caption.
