They say you get what you pay for, and in many cases, this is true: Just ask anyone who’s ever flown Spirit Airlines. (Never again). But then, there are those rare, shining moments when you find something that does exactly what it’s intended to do while looking downright chic—all for a significantly lower price point than it has any business being. That, my friends, is the case with the best patio furniture on Amazon.

While a good patio set on West Elm or Serena & Lily will run you around $1,000 (believe me, I’ve looked), there are plenty of luxe-looking options on Amazon, the majority of which are $350 or less.

True, if you’re looking for something to outfit a large outdoor space or, say, a dining set for 10, Amazon probably isn’t where it’s at. Though the site does stock a few larger conversation sets, most reviews call out how small/short they are, so you’re better off investing in something that will actually suit your needs. For smaller outdoor spaces like mine, however—think a shared condo balcony with room for a little table and chairs set or a screened-in lanai where I can sip my morning coffee (OK, fine, my afternoon coffee), Amazon furniture will not only get the job done, it will look damn chic doing it.

Yes, you’ll need to replace it more often (or at least the cushions). But unless you’re really beating the hell out your furniture, you can get away with using it for years before it really starts to show any heavy-duty wear and tear.

So. How do you find the patio furniture on Amazon that will actually look and feel as nice in person as it does in the online photos? I personally head straight to the reviews. Not to the comments, mind you, which can be a breeding ground for the internet’s Karens, but to the photo reviews. You’ll get a much better idea of an item’s quality by looking at real-life photos of it in someone’s yard than you will from the staged pics. Generally, furniture to avoid will have cushions that look cheap and flat, “wicker” that’s akin to straight up plastic and pieces that appear to be just the right size — for Thumbelina.

To avoid those undesirables, I only included options on this list with ratings of 4.1 stars or more (sans for a few I’m willing to gamble on) and a decent amount (50 or more) reviews, lowering the chances that the company is stuffing its ratings with fake ones. I also used my investigative journalism skills (read: I checked out the customer pics), materials (solid wood and PE rattan, which looks like wicker but is far more durable, are great choices) and more to ensure you’re actually getting what you pay for.

Ah, novelty purses. Kooky, kitschy and occasionally downright weird, one could say these eccentric little accessories are right on brand for me (and Lindsay Lohan, who got the memo with her Freakier Friday fortune cookie clutch). Sure, they’re not exactly practical — my pizza crossbody barely holds a tampon and the vintage telephone bag I won in an online auction still smells like mothballs — but their whimsy also brings me a whole lot of joy.

Even when they give me pause or make me scratch my head (yes, I am referring to the $275 Kate Barton goldfish bag I desperately want that holds exactly nothing), I still appreciate them for their ability to make me feel something. 

It’s in that spirit that I’ve devoted my morning to tracking down the most batshit crazy novelty bags you can buy. Sure, there will be those who can’t comprehend the purpose behind, say, a cat-shaped clutch or a leaf purse, but in the words of Nikolas Bentel (a.k.a. the mastermind behind The Pasta Bag), “For those of you asking, ‘Why? The Best Novelty Purses of 2026

1. Nikolas Bentel The Pasta Bag 3.0

You can’t get my Nikolas Bentel pasta bag 3.0 anymore, which is a damn shame, because this De Cecco farfalle-inspired purse just may be my favorite bag I’ve ever owned. In addition to being completely adorable, it’s also super high-quality, with a sturdy magnetic flap closure and a luxe leather feel and a chic little pasta-shaped charm. You *can* get the next best thing, however, in this Betsey Johnson spaghetti clutch ($128).

2. Betsey Johnson Baguette About It Bag

This bag made my heart skip a beat at first sight, and I love it even more in person. It’s printed to look exactly like a baguette, with all of the holes, cracks and intricacies of the bread, and the slab of “butter” that hangs from the zipper is the cutest little detail you ever did see. Believe it or not, it’s also highly functional—just the right size for toting essentials. It also happens to go with everything, so naturally, it’s high up in my current rotation. Find me wearing it everywhere this summer.

3. Kate Spade NYC 3D Taxi Crossbody

I’ve never been stopped more on the street more than I was wearing this taxi purse on the streets of Chicago. The trunk opens up to hold all your goods (it’s *quite* roomy, if I do say so myself), and it adds the perfect pop of color to any outfit. Sadly, it’s also totally sold out—the closest match I found was this beaded version ($368) from Susan Alexandra.

4. JW Pei Eleanor Grapes Clutch

I spotted Cult Gaia’s $598 version of this clutch on one of my favorite influencers, Coco Schiffer, during fashion week, and immediately had to have it. My novelty bag budget does have its limits, however, so I ordered this JW PEI one during the brand’s Memorial Day sale instead and hoped for the best. Let me just say: It couldn’t be more beautiful in person. The little stem is perfectly curved to use as a handle, and its resin construction is nice and sturdy. 10 out of 5 stars.

5. Betsey Johnson A Big Dill Bag

Betsey knocked it out of the park with this pickle-shaped piece, which, as the name suggests, is kind of “a big dill.” It’s a bit bigger than the baguette, which makes it easier to stuff my iPhone 16 Pro inside, and there are subtle green rhinestones across the front acting as the pickle’s tubercles. (Those are the pickle’s little bumps, in case you, like me, were unaware.) There’s also a little pickle slice at the zipper and a sweet heart detail halfway down the chain. My only complaint? The chain isn’t on this one exactly the most comfy, but it’s worth if for the overall effect.

6. JW Pei Kiara Cat Clutch

People have *so* many questions when this little beauty comes out to play. “Is it real?” No. “Where does it ‘open’?” In the middle of its back. “Does it hold anything?” A surprising amount—it’s completely hollow inside, so you can easily sneak in a pair of keys, a lipgloss, a sunscreen and some credit cards. P.S.—if this kitty is a little too over the top for you, there’s a more demure black cat version, too.

7. Staud Palm Leather Purse

This summery bag is much smaller than I had anticipated  — my iPhone 16 Pro pokes out from the top— but it’s also one of my most-used accessories. The green just seems to magically go with everything, and the unique leaf shape zhuzhes up even the most boring of ensembles. There’s a little suede insert that keeps its contents (mostly) concealed (though you can also remove it for more space in a pinch).

8. Kate Spade Glitzy Ritzy Newspaper Clutch

Extra, extra! As a journalist, this gorgeous paper clutch speaks to my soul. It’s essentially the Carrie dress (you know the John Galliano masterpiece of which I speak) in bag form. The exterior truly feels like paper (for the love of god, don’t get it wet!), but the PU lining makes it sturdy enough not to collapse under the weight of your belongings. Its headlines are made up, but honestly? They’re more appealing than the actual news, anyway. It’s been sold out for ages, but if you can swing it, this Moschino version, $2,000, certainly gives it a run for its money.

9. Kate Spade Slice 3D Pizza Crossbody

I’ve had this little beauty for a few years now, and it’s still a favorite. I tend to save it for more special occasions, since it’s so fancy (the entire thing is covered in crystals and the “pepperonis” are made of sequins). It’s also not the bag to bring along when you’ve got a lot to carry—it zips open at the “crust” and has quite a slim profile. We’re talking a few cards in the slots, a lipgloss and *maybe* a pared-down set of keys if you’re lucky. Still… she’s awfully pretty.

10. Lodis Love Crossbody Bag

Every designer and the brother has seemingly tried their hand at a heart bag at some point or another: Kate Spade had one bag in the day. Hearts Valley sells one for $125. JW Pei has its own version. But none of them have impressed me quite like Lodis’s. See, as much as i like my kitsch, I still like my pieces to look high-quality—not cartoon-ish. This is the only heart bag I’ve seen that checks my boxes—the leather is super luxe, and little details, like the looped bag charm, give it that extra-special touch.

11. Vintage ’80s Telephone Purse

I’m completely enamored with this vintage telephone booth bag, which has an actually jack inside to connect it to service. The handle has a little holder for the receiver, and you can unvelcro it to pick it up for use. Honestly, this bag is an icon, but it’s on the more delicate side (it is some 40 years old, after all), so I don’t use it nearly as often as i’d like.

12. Betsey Johnson Kitsch Nice Buns Bag

I debated buying this one for a good long while, mainly due to its height: Let’s just say this burger bag (are you sensing a food theme yet?) is not for the faint of heart. It’s bigger than my head, and I was worried it might look, oh, I don’t know, less chic, more ridiculous? While I’ll admit it’s rather cumbersome to wear, it’s also really fun. The sequin burger meat keeps it from looking cheap, and the little pickle adds a nice finishing touch to the zipper. It also holds an absolute ton, so long as your stuff fits the unique shape. This one’s only available on eBay at this point, but JW Pei has a similar style ($229) with resin construction if you’ve got your heart set on one.

13. Mango Shell Clutch

Practical, this shell clutch not. It’s on the heavier side, and the chain strap digs into my collarbone a bit. But if beauty is pain, fashion is discomfort, and I’m willing to endure it for the seashell aesthetic (so trendy!). There’s no clasp—it closes via two super strong magnets on the inside—but mine arrived with the magnets attached together, so the bag wouldn’t close right. Luckily, I have a very handy boyfriend who was able to save the day to keep my stuff from spilling out all over the place when I finally find the perfect thing to wear this with. A more practical option, since mine has sold out, might be this Lula Collection shell bag at Anthropologie ($70), which gives off the same vibes and has a similar price point.

There’s an art to dressing for a warm-weather vacation. Fall and winter are easy. You can throw on a sweater and a pair of jeans and be out the door. You’re fully covered, so you don’t have to worry about showing any body parts you don’t love, and styling is a breeze, since you’ve been got plenty of layers to work with. After nearly 15 years in Chicago, I had fall and winter on lock. But finding the best resort wear has proven tougher.

There are cutouts to contend with that may or may not be flattering for your figure. Skirts that don’t always work if you happen to be 5 foot 2 (ahem). Prints and colors that may or not be in your palette wheel. The pieces also aren’t as functional. A sheer cover up is great for the beach, but will you *really* be comfortable heading to lunch after if it shows off your cheeks?

Resort wear is a tricky space to navigate, but after three years as a Floridian, where the temps are regularly topping 90, I think I’m finally getting the hang of it. I found 11 pieces that are not only great for the heat, they’re eye-catching enough for all the photos you’ll be dying to take. 1. Lulus Marbella Dress

This dress recently came back in stock after selling out almost instantly and I couldn’t love it more. The bold, vibrant colors make it a real head-turner, and it actually fits me, which is not something I can normally say for maxi dresses due to my height. I also love that the straps are completely adjustable for a custom fit on top.

2. Petal & Pup Inara Set

Can you say Grecian goddess? This two-piece set that Petal & Pup sent over comes in the most perfect shade of ice blue and the rayon and spandex material feels heavenly on the body. Personally, I like to twist the straps up a bit so they look thinner (almost like a halter top).

3. Lulus Raluca Dress

This (stunning) dress, which Lulus sent my way, is like getting two in one. You can wear it like I have it here, as a halter-style top, but you can also criss-cross the straps in the front to make a little keyhole neckline, like they have it in the model image. Either way, the bold print will look great out on the water.

4. LSPACE Jessa Dress

Cover-ups are the hardest to get right. For starters, they’ve got to look good over your swimsuit, so the color is important. You’ll want it to offer enough coverage for you to feel confident in it, but not so much that it makes you sweat to death. LSPACE nailed it with this gifted Jessa dress. The cream is super versatile, and it’s convenience-store appropriate without being stifling.

5. All the Ways Alice Short Set and Overshirt

This set is so easy and comfortable. It’s great for walking around your resort, but works just as well for the grocery store, Disney World, you name it. The shorts are the perfect length for the over 40 set (read: not matronly, but not booty shorts) and none of the pieces wrinkle easily, unlike most linen sets, thanks to the added polyester. My only complaint is that it’s not machine washable.

8. VICI Solera Tank and Skirt

You need a bright and sunny set for bright and sunny days! The rayon of this two-piece that VICI sent over is soft, light and breathable—a.k.a. everything you want when room in your suitcase is a premium. It also helps out a *lot* when the heat index is at an all-time high.

7. Lulus Black Button-Up and Shorts

I love how elevated this gifted Lulus two-piece looks over a black or white bikini. It’s also fully polyester, which means wrinkles won’t stand a chance against it (score!). It will be on the warmer side for ultra-tropical climates, however, so I’d save this one for mid-temp days. You’ll also want to hand-wash it, since the waistband bunches up easily—something that will only be exacerbated by a washing machine.  

8. Winkbay Set

You can’t beat the price on this Amazon two-piece. While there are a few tell-tales in the quality—the material is an ultra-thin polyester and the top has little to no structure, which means it needs some regular adjustment to get it to sit just right—it’s a great little set for brunch or a shorter-lived activity.

9. Floerns Tropical Set and Aritzia Awayaday Tote

I was shocked by how much this colorful print looks like Farm Rio. The top is a little shorter than I would typically go for and the material is definitely on the thinner side, but honestly, in a heat wave, that’s not a terrible thing. As for the bag, it’s super sturdy without being scratchy—something that can’t be said for all raffia-style bags.

10. Petal & Pup Romper

There’s no easier way to get dressed on holiday than by slipping into a quick romper—and the print of this strapless Petal & Pup option, which the brand sent me to try, is right on theme. It’s also super breezy and lightweight, making it perfect for heavier meals. A pro tip? It does wrinkle, so you’re definitely going to want to use a steamer on it. This exact style is almost sold out, but I’ve taken the liberty of compiling a few similar picks rom the brand here.

13. LSPACE x The Salty Blonde August Top, Sur Pants and LSPACE Isodora Hat

LSPACE teamed up with The Salty Blonde (that’s influencer Halley Elefante for the uninitiated) to create the collection of the summer. I’ve got my eye on this special edition version of the brand’s ultra-cozy looking August Top and Sur Pants set, which comes in an eye-popping Flame hue. It’s currently en route, so I can’t confirm how it feels, but knowing LSPACE, the quality is bound to be there.

When it comes to oily hair, mine takes the cake. These aren’t your typical, run-of-the-mill, “it’s been a few too many days between washes” greasy locks. We’re talking a full-on oil slick, sometimes right after I’ve washed my tresses. You see, friends, I likely suffer from an overproduction of sebum (that’s natural oil from the scalp), which means that if my scalp isn’t balanced properly, it pumps oil out in excess, particularly near the crown of my head. I haven’t been clinically diagnosed or anything, but after plenty of research (excess sebum is also linked to a type of eczema called seborrheic dermatitis, and I happen to have atopic eczema, so I wouldn’t be shocked if I had this too), I’ve managed to keep it under control with the best shampoo for oily hair, which helps me hide my dirty little secret for up to three days at a time.

What Is the Best Shampoo for Oily Hair?

While I am not a scientist, I have tested (and wasted a lot of money) on shampoo marketed for oily hair in my quest to find the best of the best.

I’ve also done a lot of digging into the matter. According to my research, shampoo with salicylic acid *should* have done the trick, since this ingredient is meant to eliminate oil buildup and break down scaly, dead skin. And yet none of the shampoos I tried that boasted this as the star component stood a chance against “the spot” on my scalp that regularly does me dirty (literally). In fact, I liked these the least, since they also dried my hair out in the process.

Apple cider vinegar-based shampoos, which beauty experts also tout for its ability to “rid the hair of oil and product buildup to give volume and lift,” was also a non-starter—these made my hair feel kind of waxy, but certainly not clean.

Looking at the three shampoos that worked the best for me, it was those containing niacinamide (a form of vitamin B3) or tea tree oil, both of which are known to help control sebum, or salt, which Vogue has pointed to for potential sebum control, that really made a difference.

Another ingredient that I saw across all three of my faves was lactic acid, which is an alpha-hydroxy acid, and/or menthyl lactate (a derivative of menthol and lactic acid). According to board-certified trichologist Aga Tompkins, who spoke to NBC News on the topic, similar to salicylic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids like lactic acid, “gently exfoliate your scalp, regulate oil and keep follicles clear without triggering rebound oil production.”

In short, while salicylic acid, apple cider vinegar and even lactic acid may be effective for those with day-to-day grease, I believe that it’s those known sebum busters—a.k.a. the ones that have been proven to control the sebum—that really held up their end of the bargain for me.

Below, find the three shampoos that promised to do the heavy lifting of removing oil from my strands—and got the job done.

1. Christophe Robin Scalp Scrub

Best Overall Shampoo for Oily Hair

This is the end-all, be-all hair cleanser for oily-haired girls. I’ve been using it religiously since 2021, and not only has it seen my hair through its greasiest states, it’s what I reach for when I need an extra little bit of power for other shampoos just aren’t cutting through the grease. This isn’t a typical shampoo: You don’t squeeze a gel out into your hand and lather. Instead, it comes in a jar with tightly packed natural sea salt crystals that are meant to be scrubbed into your scalp. It’s got a long list of ingredients—my money’s on the combo of salt and menthyl lactate that truly make it effective—but frankly I don’t care what exactly the rest of them are doing: The combination works. The (French—of course it’s French)‚ brand recommends using this twice a week, which is perfect for my hair wash schedule, and it’s gentle enough on my hair dye to use it as often as I need. It even comes in a convenient little travel size jar that I’ve taken everywhere from Paris to Chicago.

2. Nutrire S.3 Balance Shampoo

Best Paraben-Free Shampoo for Oily Hair

I’ve always been skeptical of sulfate- and paraben-free shampoos. Apparently, that skepticism may be adding to my problem, since the powerful cleansers that are sulfates may be stripping my hair of so much oil, my scalp is overreacting and producing more (that’s the theory).  Meanwhile, bacteria and yeast-preventing parabens are reportedly doing the same, drying my tresses out and causing my sebum to go wild. The thing is, nothing formulated without them has ever left my hair feeling clean. Experts speak of an “adjustment period” when making the switch, but frankly, I haven’t been willing to walk around with nasty, grease-soaked locks long enough for my scalp to get used to a new workflow. And so, I reach for the sulfates and parabens any chance I get—or at least I did before I was sent Nutrire. Made with niacinamide and lactic acid, it’s the *only* sulfate- and paraben-free shampoo I’ve ever tried that still left my hair feeling like I actually washed it. While there are still the bad days when I have to pair it with the Christophe Robin to get the *full* clean effect, I’ve added this to my regular rotation, swapping it for my main squeeze every other wash or so, just to give my hair a break.

3. Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Shampoo

Best Cooling Shampoo for Oily Hair

This is the first shampoo that actually made a difference with my grease pit. Not only did it leave my scalp feeling tingly and cool, I could finally dry my hair again without that sinking sense of dread when I realized that my efforts to wash it had been for nought. This stuff worked—it really, really worked. My only issue was that it worked a little *too* well when it came to my hair color. After several (too frequent) trips back to the salon to fix my dye, my stylist suggested switching my shampoo (the horror!), which led me to the Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Special Color Shampoo ($25).  And it’s … OK. I don’t get that same tingly, cooling feeling I loved in the original formula, and I do think the formulation change that makes it gentler on color also makes it a bit gentler on grease. As such, it’s not my top pick against the other two shampoos listed above. If dye preservation isn’t an issue for you, however, the OG formula is a highly effective and affordable option.

Other Shampoos for Oily Hair I’ve Tried

• Ouai Anti-Dandruff Shampoo ($38): Though this is marketed for both dandruff and oil-control, its star ingredient of salicylic acid did little to make my scalp feel cleaner—it just made my strands feel dry.
• Luseta Scalp-Balancing Shampoo ($16): I had high hopes for Luseta, but this salicylic-based pick was so ineffective in the shower that I had to set it aside for my regular go-to mid-wash. I will say that I did like the brand’s scalp balancing hair mask ($36), which didn’t necessarily make my hair feel cleaner, but deeply, deeply moisturized and nourished it.
• Pura D’Or Apple Cider Vinegar Thin2Thick Set ($30): This has a 4.4-star rating from 8.7K Amazon shoppers, and is meant to promote thicker, fuller hair while also deep cleansing the scalp. I can’t say whether it does all those other things, because all I know is that I used it once, and my hair felt … weird. Certainly not clean and fresh, but rather, kind of waxy, is the best way I can describe it. It may work wonders for regrowth, but it didn’t cure my grease.

On May 1, Meryl Streep will grace us with Miranda Priestly’s presence once more in the sequel to the Devil Wears Prada. And while seemingly every brand on the planet has been trying to cash in on the franchise (I’ve seen everything from themed tweezers to an AMC popcorn bag), two clothing brands in particular are going head to head for the best Devil Wears Prada collection: Old Navy and Walmart’s Scoop.

Old Navy’s version, released on April 6 and ranging from $20 to $54, consists of T-shirts, sweatshirts and Andy Sachs-approved satchels. Walmart’s version, meanwhile, which opened up for pre-sale on April 10 and ranges from $16 to $54, will drop in full on April 20 under the Scoop umbrella.

A bit broader than the Old Navy collection, it houses everything from classic red heels like in the movie poster to jeans, skirts and power suits—and preorders are selling out fast.

So which collection do I think would get two nods from Miranda and which one would get the dreaded pursed lips?

My nods go to Old Navy, if only because it’s so on-the-nose. There’s an *actual* cerulean blue sweater, for pete’s sakes! One can’t help but appreciate the lengths Zac Posen & co. went to to not only honor the 2006 flick, but its beloved characters of Andy, Miranda and even Nigel, who gets his own bag. (And just like his character, it’s kind of the best.)

The Walmart Scoop collection, while far more wearable (are we really aspiring to wear the frumpy old cable-knit Miranda once ripped to shreds or is it just a cheeky nod?), doesn’t have nearly as strong of a viewpoint.

Sure, it’s more modern (I pulled the trigger on these barrel jeans) but which character can you see wearing, say, the lace-trimmed shorts or the peplum denim top? Miranda? Andy? Neither strike me as likely. *Maybe* Emily would try them, but in 2026, I’m not wholly convinced.

Based on what has been released thus far, this feels more like a collection of trendy things (I see you, fringe skirt) as opposed to a any sort of real tribute.

One of the best pieces of beauty advice I’ve ever gotten was also one of the most simple. A friend once told me that if I was ever feeling tired or “bleh,” I should swipe on a bold lipstick, and it would draw the attention away from my puffy or bloodshot eyes while simultaneously boosting my mood. It’s a tidbit that has always stuck with me—in fact, most days, you can find me in a traffic-stopping lipstick shade, tired or no tired. When it comes to wearing red, however, it requires a bit more than a swipe of the old tube. That’s because the absolute best red lipstick varies from person to person based on their skin tone, finish preference and even time of year.

That means that the bright crimson lippie Taylor Swift rocked to every Chiefs game may not be your perfect match. (And honestly? that’s OK, because her faves have been selling out at record speed, anyway.) See, while Taylor is a bit of a color chameleon—she reportedly has warm undertones in her skin, but cool undertones in her hair and eyes, giving her more of a neutral base (truth be told, there aren’t too many red lipsticks that don’t look fantastic on her), you may not be. Which brings us to the question below.

What Red Lipstick Is Best for Me?

As anyone who’s ever tried red lipstick on knows, there are an infinite number of crimson shades. There’s true red. Brick red (see: the first swatch in the photo above). Orange red (see: the second). Cool red (the third). And lest you want to waste your money and your time scrubbing away at your pucker because you chose an unflattering hue, it’s best to figure out which one will look best on you ahead of time.

According to the professionals at Clinique, the science to really nailing a red lip comes down to knowing your colors. Generally, people with cool undertones (a.k.a. fair-skinned gals with pinkish skin or blue-ish veins) will look best in lipstick shades with cool pink or blue-ish undertones to match, while people with warm undertones (peach to yellow or golden skin tones with veins that appear more green) may look better in orange or golden lipsticks.

I like to experiment with both in different seasons: While I might choose a bright orange-red in the summer, I typically go for a cool, berry red in the winter.

How to Wear Red Lipstick in 2026

When it comes to wearing red lipstick in 2026, there are generally two camps (at least on TikTok): the American way and the French way.

The American way involves first lining the lips with a liner and then filling them in with a stick, requiring a bit more product and precision. The amount of liner and the shade varies according to the look you’re going for. For instance, if you’re looking for a Kylie Jenner pout, you’ll want to overline your lips in a similar shade. For something more subtle or with more dimension, you may choose to be more judicious with your liner or opt for a lighter or darker shade than your actual lipstick. (See: Looks 1 and 3 in this video.)

The French way, by contrast, known as Bouche Mordue (“just bitten lips”), involves adding lipstick only to the center of the lip and fanning it out to the sides with a finger or brush for a hint of color that looks far more natural.

Of course, there is a third camp that seeks to combine the two, lining the lip before applying lipstick just to the center of the mouth and fanning it out inside the lip liner. (See the technique at the end of this video).

After trolling countless sites and reviews for the best red lipsticks around (and testing out 11 for myself), I’ve narrowed it down to 18 luscious formulas that just might be your perfect match.

Best Cool Red Lipstick

1. Nars Powermatte Lip Pigment

• Shade: Dragon Girl

All it took to pique my interest in this powerhouse hue was a nod to the fashion girlies of the 2010s by Refinery 29. I suspect most will be far more interested to know that (guess who?) Taylor Swift is also a fan, however. A “vivid siren red,” it’s on the cooler side and packs a *serious* punch as far as pigment goes, making it the red I find myself reaching for time and time again. While it’s typically worn in pencil form (NARS pencils are chubby enough to fill in the whole lip), it also comes in this lip stain in case you’re more of a traditionalist.

2. Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet Lipstick

• Shade: Rouge Charnel

For years, my signature shade was Chanel’s Rouge Allure Velvet lipstick in shade 37—L’Exuberanté. (Think the hottest of pinks.) It had a nice bright color, the tube was designed with a very satisfying push-up button at the bottom that clicked the lipstick into place for use and it was neither drying or overly slick. (I still have several tubes.) Since it appears to have been discontinued, I’ve branched out into new, red territory with Chanel’s virtual try-on tool and found my new obsession: no. 56— Rouge Charnel. Gently toeing the line between cool and warm, this lipstick has a subtle strawberry undertone that makes me feel like a Hollywood starlet the instant I put it on. Its feather-light texture strikes just the right balance between being moisturizing yet still highly pigmented, and it stays on long enough to last me through nearly a full day of Zoom calls. In short? It’s my holy grail of reds, price tag be damned.

3. Yolaine Paris Mousse de Rouge

• Shade: Garance

I reviewed the Yolaine Paris line in full and found this shade to be the perfect “French” red. It’s not shiny, über-bright or garish, like the red you might conjure up in your mind when you picture Gwen Stefani’s smacker, but more of a deep, moody red that looks like actual velvet. Better yet, it feels like velvet (hence the “mousse”). Housed in a paint-like tube, it’s best smoothed across your lips with the brand’s chic little retractable lip brush. (How much more old school glam can it get?).

4. Violette_FR Petal Bouche Matte Lipstick

• Shade: Amour Fou

I’ve been following Violette Serrat’s Instagram long enough to know that she often sets out to recreate colors she sees in real life through her (highly underrated) product line, Violette_FR. For her Petal Bouche Matte, her inspiration was a red rose, and honestly? She came pretty damn close. This cool red hue has a blue undertone that’s reminiscent of the underside of an actual rose petal and the pigment to match. On my lips, it reads like a dark pink (I’m wearing it in the top left photo above), which is a nice change of pace from the classic in-your-face cherry red and looks way better on my ultra-cool skin. It can be a little messy (I definitely recommend using a lip liner with this one), and you’ll leave a few lip prints behind, but it’s worth it for the color payoff.

5. Olivia Palermo Beauty Matte Lipstick

• Shade: Runway Red

This is definitely in my top five for an everyday red. The only reason it’s not top three? It’s not *quite* as luxurious as the Chanel and Yolaine, nor as pigmented as the Violette_FR, and I’m a sucker for a good pop of color. That said, it’s rich while gliding on, and the cool red berry hue seems to be flattering no matter what I’m wearing. I’m also a big fan of the weighty gold tube that makes it feel like it’s worth its $30 price tag.

6. Glossier G-Suit

• Shade: Jet

This can only be described as “creamy.” It’s not shiny, but not uncomfortably matte, either—more feathery, I would say. making for one of my favorite lip textures of all time. The lipgloss-like applicator glides on nice and smooth, filling in lip lines with its rose wax silica, which I can confirm delivers on the company’s claims to deliver a blurring effect. Though it’s purported to be a “true-blue red,” it borders on a dark bright pink, making it another good alternate to a classic scarlet. My one qualm is that the tube is on the smaller side and seems to go quickly, making its $24 a pop price tag less reasonable than it seems.

7. Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick

• Shade: Uncut Ruby

It took TikTok all of two seconds to hop on the bandwagon praise Revlon’s Super Lustrous line in the shade Uncut Ruby. The hype is warranted: For less than $10, you get a super pretty cherry hue that feels surprisingly great on. While most budget brands are drying or rough, this one actually feels quite nourishing. Its secret? Avocado oil and vitamin E, both of which contribute to its ultra-moisturizing formula.

8. MAC Retro Matte Lipstick

• Shade: Ruby Woo

As any good Swiftie knows, this has long been Taylor Swift’s red of choice, and I’m ashamed to say I actually haven’t tried it. *Cringe.* Despite the fact that they smell delicious (like cupcakes!), MAC lipsticks have never particularly impressed me. The texture, shades and staying power have always struck me as “OK” at best. Still, I can’t ignore the fact that this color is reportedly beloved by everyone from Taylor and Angelina Jolie to Tracee Ellis Ross. It’s a matte, which means it’s more likely to stay put (always a good thing when dealing with a potentially messy color, like red), and experts say this one is more of a neutral that can flatter all skin tones despite its blue undertones.

9. Pat McGrath Liquilust Lipstick

• Shade: Elson 4

If you’ve seen Swift’s “Bejeweled” video, you’re already familiar with Pat McGrath’s LiquiLUST Elson 4. It’s the exact shade of romance she was spotted in throughout the clip (which explains why it’s permanently waitlisted). While I can’t speak to its wear, Mother McGrath claims it’ll stay put for up to 12 hours with nary a smudge—and if Taylor trusts her works of art to it, I’d be willing to guess that’s not an inaccurate assessment. Naturally, it’s also rumored to be velvety smooth.

10. Ilia Color Block Lipstick

• Shade: True Red

Ilia is perhaps most famous for its Super Skin Tint serum (which, might I add, is very good, if a little heavy on the sunscreen), or, more recently, its blush, as seen on Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in May December in Tenderly (also good). While I haven’t tried its lipstick, it seems to be another hit for the company with more than 50 5-star reviews from shoppers who say it’s “gorgeous, luscious and hydrating.” It’s also chock-full of castor and apricot seed oil (for softness and elasticity), plus mango seed butter that’s supposed to help plump your pucker up. It’s also vegan-friendly.

Best Warm Red Lipstick

12. Gucci Lipstick

• Shade: Goldie Red

This vegan pick is every bit as luxe as you’d expect a Gucci lipstick to be. A highly flattering shade of orange-y red (even for the cool-toned, as I can attest, having tried it via a magazine sample), It’s hydrating without being too shiny and has a nice, mid-weight texture. While I didn’t notice it, there’s reportedly an extra touch of luxury courtesy of its subtle scent. (Peonies and freesia, dahlings.)

13. Meloway Hi-Rise Matte Lipstick

• Shade: New York Sunset

If I was judging based on the color alone, this would be at the very top of my warm red lipstick list: Its orangey-red hue is traffic-stopping gorgeous. (I’m wearing it here.) I’m also a huge fan of the innovating packaging. Unlike a typical lipstick case, which requires you to take the top off to apply it, this one’s built-in lid opens with a twist of the fingers. (Seriously — you can open it and put it on with one hand, which comes in clutch while driving.) It’s also vegan and cruelty-free. The one and only drawback — and it’s a big one — is that it’s one of the most drying lipsticks I’ve tried — my boyfriend actually commented on how parched my lips felt after kissing me in it. Paired with a dab of high-quality clear gloss, like Marin’s lip treatment ($20), however, it’s an absolute dream.

14. Kylie Cosmetics Matte Lip Kit

• Shade: Boss

I’m unsure exactly how to describe this shade. Though it leans toward orange, there’s also a hint of pink. The result is a bright, commanding shade that’s easily one of my favorite warm reds. The color payoff—and staying power—is unrivaled. That said, it’s not exactly the most comfortable wear. This thing is matte to the point of being drying, but for its kiss-proof vibrant color, it’s a minor inconvenience I’m willing to endure.  It’s currently sold out, but it’s worth the wait.

15. Trinny London Lip2Cheek

• Shade: Rossy

This potted pick is a great example of a shade that looks better on some than others. While it’s absolutely gorgeous on Trinny London founder Trinny Woodall—and I suspect most with warm skin tones—it’s just OK on me. A brickish tint, it’s a bit on the dry side, but it comes in a pot that can conveniently be connected to other potted Trinny London products, making it great for for travel. It’s definitely one you’ll want to apply with a brush, however, as it’s quite messy on your finger.

16. Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain Liquid Lipstick

• Shade: Always Red

Makeup guru Violette Serrat was serving up French girl beauty inspo long before she had her own makeup line—which means she once used other products. And as she told Glamour in 2016, one of her favorite shades for a classic red lip was this affordable beauty store find, with Serrat calling it her “new crush.” “The red is so intense, the texture is absolutely matte and it stays on all day (and all night!). I am obsessed!” she said. According to Serrat, it’s also perfect for olive-skinned girls like her. “Bright reds wake up my face. They help a lot when I’m tired!”

17. Christian Louboutin Rouge Louboutin Velvet Matte Lipstick

• Shade: Diva Fire

Truthfully, there’s not much I know about this lipstick other than the fact that it’s packaged in the most striking tube I’ve ever seen, which is good enough for me. While the $105 price tag has long kept me from pulling the trigger on it (I can’t imagine it being life-changing enough to warrant it), this orange-based color does appear to pack a punch. While it’s “ultra-velvety” texture is reported to last for six hours, its real draw is the hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 found within that Louboutin claims will keep your pucker hydrated for an extra six hours after the color has faded away.

18. RMS Wild With Desire Lipstick

• Shade: RMS Red

Forget the name—RMS Red borders on orange. It’s also a staple of Miranda Kerr’s. (You know, the Victoria’s Secret angel who replaced Gisele Bündchen.) “I like RMS Red because it’s from a natural brand that uses just organic ingredients. It’s] so bright and almost an orange-red, which I like,” she told InStyle in 2022.

While it’s not a great match for my Casper-worthy complexion—I feel like it washes me out, if anything, and it’s dryer than I’d like, particularly for a natural beauty product.—it looks beautiful on the supermodel, who has been called a “neutral.”

19. Charlotte Tilbury Hot Lips Lipstick

• Shade: Tell Laura

For warm-skinned gals looking for a lipstick with real “wow” factor, there’s Charlotte Tilbury’s Tell Laura.Though it borders more on orange than red, there’s still a hint of warm cardinal red underneath. Made in Italy, it has “light-diffusing pigments” that are designed to make the color look more dimensional. The brand claims it also has antioxidant ingredients that can help prevent UV damage. Not bad for $35 bones!

For years, I overlooked spring fashion. The pieces weren’t in my preferred color wheel (pastels? *Shudder*), they came out sooner than I was ready to relinquish my sweaters, and aesthetically,  I’ve always been more “guns” than “roses.”  But that was before I moved to Florida, where my fall and winter staples worked for approximately 1.5 months each year before being stuffed away in a box for the next 320 days. Here, spring fashion essentials set the tone for not only the rest of the season, but everything else, too.

The dresses I pick up in spring will be the same ones I wear all summer long and throw a jacket on over come fall. The resortwear shorts I get a jump on are likely to become staples I’ll wear on repeat during summer’s most sweltering days. (So, all of them.) In other words? Spring fashion essentials have the power to make or break an entire year’s worth of clothing.

I’ve been on the hunt for just the right pieces to kick the year off right, and with a little help from Maje, Tuckernuck, Madewell, Dolce Vita and LSPACE, all of whom were gracious enough to send me a few things from their spring lines, I’ve got my starting lineup.

1. Maje Mini Tweed Dress

Maje is one of my favorite brands, bar none. Chanel-inspired but with more grit, the French line is often marked by plenty of buttons, tweed and collars, and this dress has all three in spades. You can take the collar off for two different looks, and it’s a classic design you’ll not only have, but wear for years to come. (Seriously though, I have Maje pieces from 2022 and beyond that are still in heavy closet rotation—these are not your one-and-done trend garments.) This piece in particular is super thick and durable, and the buttons aren’t going anywhere.

2. Aritzia The Cinch Jacket

Aritzia’s viral Cinch jacket takes the funnel neck trend that cropped up on leather styles all fall long (I’m a big fan of this faux version) and keeps the party going in a springy twill. It was such a hit, my Folio Brown hue is totally sold out, but Aritzia usually does restocks and it also comes in an oyster white. It is a bit oversized—the XS was too big on me, but the XXS was just right.

3. Tuckernuck Caspar Sweater

Spring straddles that fine line between warm and sunny and uncomfortably brisk, which means you can’t relegate your sweaters to the back of your closet just yet. Then again, when they’re this gorge, why would you ever want to? This one is even prettier in person—there’s metallic threading throughout that gives it an added bit of luxe. It’s just the thing to throw on in a pinch, even if you’re just pairing it with shorts at the beach. It’s also opaque enough that you can wear it without a tee underneath.  

4. Reformation Iris Top

My biggest beef with Reformation is how many of its pieces are made from linen, a.k.a. the wrinkliest fabric on the planet. This Tencel knit blend breaks the mold. It’s soft, it’s comfy and it’s thick enough to keep you semi-warm if need be. If I had endless funds, I’d probably buy it in every color.

5. Madewell Relaxed Sweater Tee

Who said you have to give up cashmere come spring? Not Madewell, who sent me this perfect little sweater tee. Every bit as cozy as your winter staples, only airier, the bright ruby hue singlehandedly proves you don’t have to go with a lighter palette just because the sun is shining. (Is it or is it not giving spring tulips?) It’s also long enough to cover the button on my jeans—a very weird, but very important, hangup that I have with most tops.

6. Vici Cecilia Cardigan and Dress

I gasped when I saw this set: That’s how stunning I think it is. There’s just something about a matching cardi and dress that is so incredibly chic to me; even moreso when contrast trim is involved. It’s not without its imperfections: The dress is pretty unforgiving in the midsection and it’s bordering on too short, but honestly? The overall look is so freaking cute, I don’t even care. It’s also still in stock, which for Vici, is kind of miraculous.

7. LSPACE Samantha Dress

If LSPACE isn’t on your radar yet, it really ought to be. You may have seen the brand’s (very cute) swimwear on Revolve, but it also makes some great clothing. Case in point? This Samantha halter dress. At 40, I’m pretty cognizant of which clothing styles look best on my frame, and halters are always > spaghetti straps. It’s a wee bit see-through, but that’s really not a problem, since I plan to wear it as super chic cover up on beach or pool days. (Hence the giant beach bag.)

8. Dolce Vita Helan Wedges

One minute they’re out, the next minute they’re “in,” but regardless of their Vogue status, wedges have a special place in my heart. Dolce Vita has crafted *the* perfect specimen for 2026 with its gorgeous Helan. They’re exactly 3 inches high (not too short, but not too tall), are super comfortable to walk in and the straps are thin enough to avoid pulling focus from your outfit (always a plus when you have bunions, like me). They’re also a heck of a lot more palatable than any clunky slide you can throw at me (woof).

9. LSPACE Decker Dress

When it starts to get hot here—like, really, really hot—I need something that requires as little effort as possible, but still looks cute. This is my golden ticket—I can literally just pull it on and go. I don’t even have to wear a bra with it, since it’s got a strapless shelf built in. I also like that the pockets are roomy enough to hold my keys and gloss on my neighborhood walks.

10. Madewell Remy Leather Mary Jane Espadrilles

I am a complete sucker for a red shoe. Sadly, the crimson hue seen here is nearly sold out, but honestly? These are so freaking comfortable that I would wear them in just about any color. I was expecting them to feel scratchy, since the bottoms look like jute, but there’s a “Cloudlift lite” padding in there that is genuinely delightful. The leather isn’t hard either—this coming from a gal with *very* sensitive heels. (Like, sneakers rip the back of my foot off, sensitive.)  

11. Princess Polly Nyren Top

The striped print elevates this basic tee into a spring-ready ensemble just add jeans. It’s decently long (death to the exaggerated crop) and I think the scoopback gives it a little something extra.

12. Verdusa Bow Top

This one was a real gamble: Not only is it from Amazon, it’s got a one of those trapeze style high-low cuts that can be … well, let’s just say less than flattering, shall we? Much to my surprise, however, this is a quality shirt that looks way pricier than its $20 price tag. It’s nice and crisp (the polyester won’t wrinkle easily), and I’m obsessed with the little bow back detailing.

13. Madewell ‘90s Boatneck Spring Tee

Long-sleeve tops—not sweaters, but tops—are the items most lacking in my closet. (Mostly because I never like any.) But I do love stripes, and I do love a boatneck, and Madewell just so happened to pair those elements together in this gifted spring fashion essential that was too alluring to resist. The cotton material is nice and thick, and it’s slimming without being constrictive.
