Few fashion items in history are as polarizing as the fanny pack. The mere mention of this little hands-free belted pouch can instantly spark a cringe or a shudder, and frankly, it’s an understandable reaction.
After years of reigning supreme on high as the “it” bag of the moment circa the late ‘80s and early ‘90s, the fanny was adopted a little *too* readily by the masses. Slowly but surely, the same carryall that used to adorn the hips of only the most fashion-forward began to work its way into even grandma’s closet, eventually becoming the pack of choice for mall-walkers and unhip tourists the world over.
And though many bygone trends have managed to circle back around (I’m looking at you, platform slides), the fanny pack (rumored to have been created by an Australian woman named Melba Stone who was inspired by a kangaroo’s pouch — who knew?) is still met with cynicism.
Sure, it’s convenient and all, ridding your shoulders of any unnecessary weight while simultaneously freeing up your hands for drinks, food or anything else you might feel like holding, but has it actually evolved enough to become, dare I say, cool once more? Are we really ready to take these music-fest staples out and about into the modern world?
If the response to my recent Facebook rambling about being struck by an overwhelming desire to purchase one, which received no less than more than 10 enthusiastic votes of confidence, is any indicator, the answer is a resounding yes.
Not only are the fanny packs of today light years ahead of the cheesy nylon packs you remember from your youth, thanks to their smooth materials and stylish redesigns, they’re being adopted by some of the top names in the industry, poising fanny packs to dominate the style scene once more.

1. Rebecca Minkoff Edie Belt Bag ($248): It was a black quilted leather hip holder just like this one that led me on my journey of fanny pack exploration. Spotted on a stylish woman near Loyala University, I couldn’t help but think how chic — yes, chic! — it looked on her as she passed by. More luxe details, such as a lobster claw closure and a magnetic flap, elevate the aesthetic of this Rebecca Minkoff version even further.
2. Steve Madden Convertible Fanny Pack ($40.80): If you’re not *quite* willing to shell out more than $200 for a fanny I don’t blame you), or if you’re simply not into animal hide, this quilted faux-leather pick from Steve Madden will give you all the elegance of the real deal at a fraction of the cost.
3. MICHAEL Michael Kors Nylon Fanny Pack ($68): Rebecca Minkoff’s not the only high-end designer getting in on the fanny game! Michael Kors offers his own sleek nylon pack, complete with leather trim, in four different hues.
4. State Crosby Fanny Pack ($45): If you’re going to take the plunge and sport a fanny, I say do it loud and proud — I’m obsessed with the bright neon color of this leather STATE option, plus, the attachment has been cleverly made to resemble a car seat buckle. Genius!
5. Rounded Eyelet Fanny Pack ($15): The eyelet details on this “bum bag” (I know, I know, I shuddered typing that, as well), do such a good job of disguising its true form, even naysayers are likely to be impressed.
6. Alexander Wang Attica Soft Spike Fanny Pack ($795): Talk about a fanny with flair! Alexander Wang upped the ante on the fanny game with golden spike studs and accent zippers that are anything but basic.
7. Innue’ Fanny Pack ($114): This Italian calfskin beauty is every bit as cute as your run-of-the-mill tote or crossbody, but far, far more handy.
8. reTH Riley Belt Bag ($49.50): reTH put a new spin on an old classic with plenty of bejeweled grommets and crystals that are sure to turn heads for all the right reasons.
9. Clear Lemon Fanny Pack ($20): This lemon-shaped fanny is just plain fun (and, might I say, would go swimmingly with my new fave jewelry line).
