New year, new products to obsess over. All winter long (and OK, all fall too), I’ve been testing out new clothes, makeup, home goods and more, silently committing to memory the things I absolutely love and want to have on hand forever … and ever and ever and ever. If you’re feeling inundated by what to buy in January (who wouldn’t be, between TikTok shop, Instagram and Google?), you can start by thinking about your New Year’s resolutions. What do you need to accomplish your goals? Something to work out with? A better alcohol alternative? Those are the questions I asked myself when choosing my favorite products for January. The result is a mix of cozy, useful and stylish finds that I’ll be putting to use all month long—and beyond. Check them out below.
What to Buy in January
1. Brunette the Label Amelia Jacket
- Resolution: Buck the trends
Aviator coats may be *the* coat of 2024 (separate blog post coming soon), but they’re also incredibly timeless—ladies began borrowing the look from the men more than 20 years ago. While most have an oversized, boxy fit that does next to nothing for my petite frame, this one from Brunette the Label strikes a nicer silhouette with its cropped fit and elastic hem. I also like that its not real leather. (What can I say, I’m an animal lover!)
2. Astrid & Miyu Mood Ring
- Resolution: Live in the moment
For a woman who grew up in the ’90s, no piece of jewelry is more nostalgic than a mood ring. So naturally, you can imagine my excitement when I started to see them popping up at some of my favorite bauble shops. I love the chunky design of this one—so much so that I begged my boyfriend to get it for me for my birthday. (Spoiler alert: He did.) It’s been every bit as fun as I remember to check my “mood” from minute to minute,” and having obtained a few other pieces from the brand, I trust the silver not to tarnish—even Posh wears A&M!
3. Being Frenshe
- Resolution: Develop better sleep hygiene
I have never been the girl with a nighttime routine. In fact, more times than not, it’s enough to get me to even lay down before the wee hours. (Case in point: I’m writing this blog post at 12:30 a.m.) But Ashley Tisdale’s Unwind & Rest collection of Lavender Cloud products—more specifically, this body serum stick—have made me at least consider developing one. I’ve never been wild for lavender, but something about the blend of it with milky sandalwood, sweet cardamom, coconut and purple iris is absolutely heavenly—particularly when you’re looking to, well, unwind and rest. The stick serum is great, since you can swipe it on all of your touch points (I usually do my throat and wrists), and it’s not the least bit sticky or slimy—it basically melts right into your skin. It’s also clean, vegan and cruelty-free—a girl’s dream!
4. Chaser Jet Wrap Skirt
- Resolution: Get dressed with passion
Chaser has really been stepping up its style game as of late. While I’ve always loved the brand’s graphic tees, its latest offerings, which include a heart-stopping David Bowie tee and this ultra-cool plaid wrap skirt, have me more excited about getting dressed than I’ve been in a long time. To top it off, the company has recruited Grace McKagan, who is about as badass as they come, as its model of choice. (If you’re not familiar, Grace is the daughter of Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan and as far I’m concerned, she’s the closest thing to a true rock star her generation has—stop what you’re doing and go listen to her song “Ting Tang” immediately.) I love the unique design of the skirt, which offers a new take on the high-low hem, and it fits like a glove in my normal size. The cotton flannel is also nice and soft—be on the lookout for me to model it soon.
5. Lola Blankets Chillin Cheetah Blanket
- Resolution: Self-care
Despite the fact that we live in Florida (it was 78 degrees today, suckers!), we have an ungodly amount of blankets in our house. There are blankets on the couch. Blankets on the bed. Cat blankets. Blankets in the closet. Needless to say, I’ve tested out my fair share, including, yes, the Khloé Kardashian and Hailey Bieber-touted Barefoot Dreams blanket. (It’s alright.) Out of the mounds of covers to be found in our house, there is one that kicks every other blanket’s sweet ass by a long shot: the Lola Blanket. It’s luxuriously soft—like diving into a (very thick) pillow of animal fur, only it’s 100 percent vegan and cruelty-free. It’s warm but not too warm, I’m obsessed with the cheetah pattern and it’s oddly comforting—I regularly find myself running my hands over it when I’m not using it. Even our cat loves it, using it to make her biscuits on the daily. And yet, it’s never the worse for wear. You can even (gasp!) machine wash it!
6. Reech NamaSTAY Yoga Mat
- Resolution: Work out more
I tested out this yoga mat for a story in 2022, and it’s still my yoga mat of choice. Not only has it held up through all of my sweat sessions, both at home and at in-person classes, I’ve yet to fall on it as a result of sliding (knock on wood). And with my lack of grace, that’s saying a lot. More importantly, it’s made of natural tree rubber and antibacterial polyurethane, both of which are biodegradable. That’s pretty huge, considering that as of 2018, 40.3 percent of yoga mats were being made with entirely non-biodegradable materials. In a nutshell? It’s WAY better for Mother Earth. It also got me compliments from my yoga instructor, who noticed it and asked how I liked it—NBD.
7. Jenni Kayne Cabin Mocs
- Resolution: More investment pieces, less fast fashion
I was gifted these moccasins earlier this year, and I’ve gotta say, they’ve been an absolute game changer. They’re warm without being stifling and the suede footbed lives up to its claims to mold to your foot. It feels like they’re getting comfier and comfier with each day that I wear them, and the comfier they get, the more I reach for them. I also appreciate the super thick cork sole, since I can wear them to the mailbox or grocery store just the same as I can pad around my house in them. I truly, truly love them (though I can’t say my cat, who hates the natural wool, feels the same). They’re obviously an investment piece, but considering how many pairs of UGGs my mom has gone through over the years and the fact that I gravitate to these almost daily, I think the cost per wear will work itself out.
8. Proxies Sparkling Rosé
- Resolution: Drink Less
I’m not going to sugarcoat it. Most non-alcoholic wines taste exactly like what they are: flavored juice. Try as they might, they just can’t compete with the real deal. Or so I thought. Developed by Canadian food company Acid League, Proxies uses fruits, teas, spices and “complex ferments” to zhuzh up its alcohol-free offerings—and it works. This stuff actually tastes like a sophisticated beverage as opposed to a fancy glass of grape juice. The bubbles also give it an added element of realness. Just be sure not to leave the top on too long—mine exploded off the bottle. (Whoopsie!) Whether you’re going all in on dry January or merely looking to cut back on your alcohol intake for 2024, this is the one product that might actually up your success rate.
