There’s less than two weeks to go before Mother’s Day, and if it snuck up on you (again) this year, you’re not alone. Now, you’ve got three options. (Actually, make that two, because option no. 3—which is to disappoint dear old mom with a whole lot of nothing—isn’t really all that viable, now is it?)

Option no. 1: Panic, spend hours searching the internet for just the thing, only to give up and send mom something cringey, like a vacuum attachment.

Option no. 2: Relax, because my Mother’s Day gift guide is chock-full of seriously legitimate presents that mom will actually like—and most have express shipping options.

Some of these gifts will be tried (flowers? For Mother’s Day? Groundbreaking), but also true, while others, like Vivrelle’s designer purse membership, are likely to be new to your family matriarch. It doesn’t really matter which one you choose, however, because they’re all pretty fab, if I do say so myself.

I made sure to select things for a wide range of budgets (products range from $14 to $349) and there’s options for every kind of mom, from the plant-obsessed to the ultra-anxious.

Below, I give you my Mother’s Day gift guide for 2026.

If there’s a mom who wouldn’t appreciate a little bubbly with her flowers, I’m not sure I want to know her. UrbanStems teamed up with Avaline (yes, the Cameron Diaz-backed organic wine company) for two special Mother’s Day offerings, one of which is the featured Petals & Prosecco. Composed of pink and white roses and garden roses, the flower arrangement comes in a box with easy instructions—take the rubber bands off, fill a vase with the included flower food, trim the stems and pop them in a vase. (If you’re not sure she has a vase, you can get a matching rose quartz pink one for $25 at checkout.)

There’s also an all-white Blanc in Bloom option, which features an all-white bouquet of roses, garden and spray roses, ranunculus, carnations, ornithogalum, lisianthus, ruscus and eucalyptus and comes with a bottle of Sauvy B.

If mom doesn’t have a Bandolier by now, it’s high time she did: It’s basically the phone case to end all phone cases. The removable crossbody strap means she’ll be able to carry her phone around hands-free without worrying about misplacing it, and the attached wallet, which fits up to seven cards (it says five, but I’ve fit more), will quickly replace her need for a purse. This set also includes a matching expanded pouch for any extras (think keys, lip gloss, ect) and an AirPods case. There’s no express shipping available, however, so I strongly advise ordering ASAP.

Aeston West just launched in October 2025, but trust me when I say it’s one of the most luxe skincare brands you’ll come across for the price. There are just three items in the whole collection—a Cleansing Nectar ($58), a Treatment Mist ($78) and a Signature Serème ($98)—and this little discovery set will let her test all three for $50. All three products are based on one signature ingredient, cellvitate, which the company claims will “repair visible signs of aging while protecting against future damage.” While I’m always skeptical of making any such claim (unless you’re a scientist conducting a controlled experiment, has anyone ever really been able to attribute a reversed forehead wrinkle to their face serum?), but I can say with confidence that it lives up to its claims of luxury. The serème, in particular, is a treat to slather on and smells like you’re in a Waldorf Spa.

It’s been a good long while since I’ve written a post here, and not for nothing, friends! The one thing irresistible enough to bring me out of blog retirement? Halloween. My love for spooky season knows no bounds, and no virus or mountain of work could ever stop me from waxing poetic about it.

With the countdown on to the big day (less than a week now, people!) I’ve rounded up nine Halloween-themed things I’m particularly excited about for 2020, all of which can be used long after the holiday has ended … BOO. Keep reading to nab all my favorites for yourself.

I’ve been drooling over these Wooden Ships jumpers for years, and after finally (finally!) pulling the trigger on the Big Skull crew, my only regret is that I now have an addiction to $100+ sweaters. This thing is everything sweater season dreams are made of: It’s super soft (no scratchy, itchy fabric here), it’s oversized, so as to envelope you like a blanket, and somehow, it’s still shapely, so you won’t look like you’re wearing a unflattering sack. For a gal with alternative style, such as myself, the giant skull graphic also happens to be entirely appropriate for year-long wear.

While much of Little Rooms’ uniquely eclectic brand features futuristic, extraterrestrial designs (see: these alien studs or Spaceship necklace), its more recent offerings harken back to the hauntingly beautiful 19th century. Inspired by the late master of mystery, Edgar Allan Poe, this Victorian signet ring features the bird from one of the American author’s most famous poems, “The Raven,” along with the famous phrase the bird repeatedly croaked: “nevermore.” Pick it up in the pictured sterling silver, or, for all you warm-tones out there, the sterling-silver option that’s plated in 18K yellow gold.

As any wine lover can attest, much like a book cover, a bottle’s label art can not only make all the difference in which one you choose at the grocery store but set the mood for your wine-drinking experience. Apothic wine, which boasts some truly captivating Gothic artwork in any season, is taking things one step further this Halloween with an interactive experience the brand is calling an “evening of intrigue”—and it’s hosted by none other than the ultimate demon-killer herself. That’s right, friends: Through All Hallow’s Eve, Sarah Michelle Gellar—a.k.a. Buffy the Vampire Slayer—will read you a choose-your-own adventure-style story that will send tingles down your spine and ultimately lead you to an Apothic wine recommendation that will best suit your tastes. My brand recommendation? Apothic red ($8.99): “smooth, with a hint of intrigue, just like me”—at least according to SMG. She certainly wasn’t wrong about the “smooth” part—even the brand’s ominous-looking Apothic Dark ($8.99) is as palatable as they come, with hints of ripe blueberries and blackberries besides. When paired with the spooky tale, it was just I needed to get into the Halloween spirit.

Blue skin? Check. Cartoon googley eyes? Double check. Created by AR/XR makeup artist Paige Piskin of Bratz filter fame, it’s as close to a Burtonized version of yourself as you’ll get, which, if you know me at all, is basically my life’s dream. What can I say? The animated undead suits me, if I do say so myself. Pro tip: Tap the screen before taking your photo for an even more ghoulish glow.

Forget the garish oranges and blacks that are typically associated with Halloween. This year, Michaels is giving the holiday a serious makeover with a spooky line of pink-and-black décor that marries skulls, cobwebs and all things macabre with flowers and muted cream and blush tones (see: this ghostly tabletop typewriter). I’m not the only one that’s obsessed with this collection, either—far from. In fact, much of it is already sold out online and in many local Michaels stores. If you’re lucky enough to get your hands on this romantically eerie collection, however, it’s one to be cherished.

Speaking of Edgar Allan Poe, I’d be remiss not to mention this collection of short stories that pays homage to “The Tell-Tale Heart” author. Now, I’ll be frank: I’m not a short story fan. In fact, I typically loathe them. But these modern-day retelllings, which reimagine 13 of Poe’s most famous works, not only held my attention all the way through, they had me thinking about them long after I’d finished the book—particularly “Metzengerstein,” by Kendare Blake and “A Drop of Stolen Ink” by Emily Lloyd-Jones. In fact, I’d venture to say that these stories rank right up there with the best writing I’ve read in the last two years. I will caution, however, that Poe’s original short stories, which are included in the book, will be like reading stereo instructions for anyone born in the 21st century—you’ve been warned.

The sinister artwork and name of this three-wick candle instantly drew me in, though I was admittedly a bit hesitant to spend $25 on it without a clue as to whether I might like the scent. The solution? A test-drive on the far less expensive hand soap (on sale for $3.95). So what, you might ask, does vampire blood smell like? Instead of the overpowering, heady floral scent I had anticipated based on the description of “blood-red strawberry,” midnight-blooming jasmine and dark Transylvanian plum with essential oils, Vampire Blood smells … surprisingly sweet. This soy wax blend of is light and even, dare I say, fruity—like a lotion from my middle school days of yore. In short? It’s definitely worth the investment—especially if you wait for the store’s frequent “two for $24.50” three-wick candle sale.

This deep, berry color is a tinge darker than average but not so dark you’ll scare your coworkers. C’est parfait!

9. The Craft: Legacy

The Craft is one of, if not my favorite, movie of all time—I literally wrote an entire post ode to the ‘90s witch largely centered on my love for this film. The fact that it’s getting a remake is blasphemous, to say the least. Still, I’d be flat out lying if I said I wasn’t the least bit curious. While I’m fully expecting to hate it, I also fully intend on watching it when it’s released via On Demand on Wednesday, October 28.

If there’s one word I never want to hear again, it’s “coronavirus.” Once a term you merely heard on the news in passing, coronavirus, or COVID-19 as it’s now commonly known, quickly took over nearly every facet of our lives, from our jobs and our social gatherings to our workout routines and our wardrobes. It’d be an understatement to say that no one expected this sh*t to last for more than half a year. And yet, a good six months after it first entered our vernacular, coronavirus is still here, hanging around. While I’ve largely advocated for staying positive throughout this whole ordeal (and still do—it’s the only way to get through, in my humble opinion!), I am human, and it does wear me down. I want to be drinking beer at a street fest. I want to be getting all dressed up and delighting in an Alice in Wonderland-themed tea party (yes, they exist, and yes, I had plans to go before to one before all of this nonsense began). I want Mötley Crüe, Poison and Def Leppard to be blasting my face off from the insanely close seats I managed to snag for their joint stadium tour. Instead, I am home, typing up a blog post about the few creature comforts I’ve turned to (you know, besides homemade margaritas, copious amounts of wine and dry shampoo) to help quell my disappointment over missing out on these and many, many more of summer’s biggest adventures.

I’m not exactly reinventing the wheel with these finds—loungewear sets and binge watches are hardly groundbreaking, I’m aware—but with everything seemingly going to hell in a handbasket all around us, I think we could all stand to deal with a little bit of the familiar. And who knows? Maybe they’ll give you the slightest modicum of comfort, too: at least until we get some form of vaccine and our lives can somewhat return to normal. (Here’s hoping!)

1. BP. All Weekend Set: I’m not much of one for athleisure. In fact, I recently bought my first pair of workout leggings (I sh*t you not) from Target, and rather than feeling like I’d been missing out on maximum comfort all these years, all I felt supremely was more aware of the loose skin between my thighs. There’s one loungewear set, however, that I bought at the start of quarantine (or lockdown, or the pandemic or whatever the hell you want to call it), that feels so great, it has since become my favorite slobwear: These BP. All Weekend crop pants ($39) and this matching BP. All Weekend crop sweatshirt ($39). On days where I feel like doing absolutely f*cking nothing—and, let’s be real, there have been a lot of them in 2020—these are my go-tos. They’re soft, cozy, not too hot and don’t make me look nearly as grandma-esque as some of my other non-pj pj’s. In short? They’re a match made in quarantine Heaven.

Photo via Freeform/Justin Coit)

2. The Bold Type: While I’m normally a murder mystery/reality show type of gal, I found myself in desperate need of something less dark and drama-filled in recent months. Essentially, I needed a distraction from the onslaught of negative, dreary news that’s been bombarding us 24/7. Freeform’s The Bold Type has been just what the doctor ordered. Available for streaming on Hulu, this series about three best friends in their mid-20s living in Manhattan and working for a women’s lifestyle magazine is one that harkens back to a pre-COVID time, when clothes, friendships and boys reigned supreme. Sure, it tries a bit too hard at times to school us all on life’s tough lessons and social issues, but so did Saved by the Bell, and no one’s complaining there! Plus, there’s Sutton, a.k.a. the show’s uplifting, actually funny badass b*tch, to temper her occasionally overly preachy pals, Jane and Kat.

3. Finishing Touch Flawless Vibrating Facial Roller ($18.99): Facials and other spa services may be off the table for now, but that doesn’t mean we don’t all still deserve a little pampering. This twist on the über-popular jade face roller pairs a cooling, rose quartz stone with a gentle pulsing vibration in order to massage your facial muscles (thereby increasing your circulation) and drive serums, moisturizers and the like more deeply into your skin. Most importantly, however, at least for me, it’s a chance to take a little timeout—if only for just five minutes—whenever I need a little pick-me-up.

4. My Trusty Bath Pillow: Of all of the gifts my boyfriend has given me over the years, one of the most useful has been this simple bath pillow—especially post-pandemic life. With this little beauty, I can hop in a warm scalding tub of water and read to my heart’s content without distraction (even my phone doesn’t follow me here) or simply kick back and enjoy a glass of vino without worrying about any uncomfortable plastic that might otherwise poke its way in between my shoulder blades. Since my pillow is mesh, it also dries incredibly quickly, so soggy, wet messes are of no concern. It has since sold out on Amazon, but you can get a similar version ($21.24) here.

5. High Heels: I know what you’re thinking: How in the hell is something that’s akin to a torture device for your foot making you more comfortable in quarantine? Sure, my heels won’t deliver the same fuzzy warmth as my loungewear set, but hear me out: They do provide me with a smidge of normalcy when I put them on—even if it’s just for a run to the grocery store. My favorite pair to slip on this summer have been these Sam Edelman Daffodil sandals ($49.99), in part because I’m loving everything snakeprint these days (watch your back, leopard), and in part because for a pair of heels, they’re quite comfy, if I do say so myself. They also conceal my bunions nicely (yes, I have them, and yes, they’re unsightly as f*ck), and really, what more could a girl ask for from a shoe?

Photo via Amazon

6. Books galore: I’m a big reader under normal circumstances, so needless to say, much of the extra free time I’ve found myself with these days has been devoted to books. Ironically, my 2020 novel selections, much like the rest of the year, have been straight dumpster fires, but there’s at least one pick I’ve read in the last six months that has not only managed to keep my attention, but leave me reflecting on its pages days after I’d finished it: Joan Didion’s Play It As It Lays ($11.79). Yes, friends, it took one of America’s classic female authors to snap me out of my literary funk, but good, bad or mediocre, my precious tomes are always there to transport me to another place in time when I’m feeling stuck—Didion’s to Hollywood, Nevada and the expressways in between, where a troubled divorcée is grappling to find her place in the world as a newly single woman in the ’60s.

Photo via Koolaburra by UGG

7. A Giant Sherpa Throw: I’m getting up there in my old age, and sometimes, I need a midday snooze like the 34-going-on-95-year-old woman that I secretly am (don’t judge). It’s in those moments that I retreat to our bedroom to cozy up for a nice little siesta that I most appreciate our giant Threshold sherpa throw, which seemingly has the power to instantly put me to sleep. It has since sold out at Target, but this Koolaburra by UGG Reese throw ($31.99), looks, and I would imagine, feels, every bit as cozy thanks to its reversible Sherpa composition. Trust me: This thing is sure to be your new favorite snuggle buddy.

Photo via Z Supply

8. A Casual Jumpsuit: You can’t go wrong with a casual jumpsuit: They’re loose and breezy enough to feel completely at ease but still look put-together enough that you can run to the store or take a walk without feeling like a complete and utter troll. My favorite one is a cropped Wild Fable find (thank you, Tar-jey), but since it’s sold out, I give you the one I’m currently lusting after most: Rag Poets’ Ayana jumper ($76). Not only does it have a drapey, oversized fit that doesn’t look restricting in the slightest (so long, camel toe—yeah, I said it!), it’s made of rayon, which is known for being soft, cool, comfortable and highly absorbent—all things you definitely want in a fabric that’s going to be encasing your entire body.

Photo via Bath & Body Works

9. Three-wick Candles From Bath & Body Works: At the risk of sounding utterly basic, I’m a Bath & Body Works candle fangirl through and through. While I’d normally lean in to a more fruity, summery roster of scents in the height of the warm-weather seasons, it’s been the brand’s more warm, inviting fragrances (think White Caramel Cold Brew and Chocolate Marshmallow Cloud), that have made my nights in this pandemic that much more enjoyable. Next up on my “to-buy” list? Pumpkin Snickerdoodle, Fresh Fall Morning and Cinnamon Irish Cream. While they’re currently $24.50 apiece, I highly recommend waiting for one of the store’s regular web sales, when they drop down to roughly $12.

Not only does it smell like an actual pumpkin pie (my mouth is watering just thinking about it), it really does make your skin glow with its unique blend of pumpkin enzymes (to exfoliate), alpha hydroxyl acids (to help break down any dead, lingering skin cells) and micro-crystals (to polish). The result? A refreshed, dewy complexion that will make you feel like a whole new woman.

11. A bold lipstick: An old friend once told me that the secret to instantly looking less tired was to throw on a swipe of bright, bold lipstick in order to distract the world from your haggard, puffy eyes. While the jury’s still out on whether or not this little hack actually works, I’d like to believe that it does, and that many a Monday zoom call has been saved by Chanel’s L’Exuberante ($38), or more recently, Yves Saint Laurent’s Tatouague in Unconventional Coral ($38).

12. My Trusty Lap Desk: Another gift from my always-practical boyfriend that’s proven to be a godsend? My Sofia + Sam memory foam lap desk ($27.99). Without it, my thighs would have undoubtedly been marred by something known as “toasted skin syndrome“—a skin condition marked by “mottled-looking” epidermis that’s caused by heat exposure—by now. In addition to writing this blog (rather sporadically, as of late, I’m afraid), I’m also an editor by trade, meaning I’m on the computer 24/7. This mini “desk” is thick enough that my legs never feel the heat my MacBook Air is giving off, even when it sounds like it’s about to explode because I opened roughly 2,500 tabs on it … again. Its cushy and comfortable, allowing me to work for however long I need to from wherever I want, be in the couch, the bed or our oversized armchair.

January tends to get a bit of a bad rap. With the holidays over and the dreary, bitter cold of winter’s clutches just beginning to take hold, it can seem there’s not much to smile about. Then again, perhaps you just need a bit of inspiration! Whether in comes in the form of a great movie, a new outfit, or a fresh shade of lipstick, sometimes, it really is the little things. Below, find five things I’m loving in January.

Photo via Prytty

What I’m Reading

I kicked off 2020 with Magic of I’s 2020 astrology planner ($45, Magic of I). This thing is the real deal. Not only does it suffice as a standard daily planner, with added space for monthly and weekly intentions, it also holds secrets to the universe at large, introducing readers to the practice of living life in alignment with the cosmos. (Or at least, that’s the idea.)

While I was more than a little intrigued by its premise, this book, which is deemed suitable for anyone with an interest in astrology and the phases of the moon, is a bit more, uh, advanced, shall I say, than your basic horoscope. Designed to clue you into the realm of the stars, from the moon’s exact positioning in the sky — and how to make the most of the phase each position represents — to the movements of the planets and their potential impact on your own daily dalliances, it’s equipped with an intricate symbol system you can use to decipher your own in-depth analysis of the day to come. Or, if you’re not quite there yet (raises hand), quick summations are also provided on given days to alert you as to any opportunities (or alternately, *gulp,* challenges). A day marked “dark moon chill,” for instance, is said to be great for slowing down and inner reflection.

For beginners, such as myself, the codes and lingo presented can be a bit overwhelming, but once you’ve begun to dive in, it starts to make more and more sense — sort of like learning a new language. My hope, by the end of the year, is to be able to comprehend it all without needing to use the key, and to open myself up to the universe’s clues on how to best direct my own sails. Every little bit helps, right?

What I’m Drinking

When it comes to hot beverages, I’ve always been a coffee-over-tea kinda’ gal. Black tea, in particular, seems to have a particularly bitter aftertaste to me that I could never quite get into. Still, I’ve always idealized the concept of cozying up with a good book and a cup of tea, and so, every once in a while, I give it another go. One day, I noticed a particularly fancy-looking DAMMANN tea pouch (from $16.45, Amazon) in our cupboard that my boyfriend Kevin had brought home from the Peninsula. When I opened it up, my whole outlook on the warm drink was changed. Everything about this French import was draped in opulence, from its elegant, silky-smooth mesh tea bag to the fragrant loose tea leaves found within. It also tasted better than any tea I’ve ever tried, with a full, robust flavor profile that was nothing short of heavenly. Turns out, I just might be a tea lover after all!

The bad news? Those über-luxe satchets are reportedly made of nylon and plastic, making them a less-than-ideal choice for anyone with an interest in preserving the environment. The good news? The brand also sells its wares in a loose leaf version, which you can pair with a whimsical little steeper ($6.24, Amazon) for all the same deliciousness without the guilt.

1. Magic of I 2020 Astrology Planner ($45, Magic of I); 2. DAMMANN Frères Tea Satchels (From $16.45, Amazon); 3. Prytty Casual Turtleneck Two-Piece Sweater Dress ($39.99, Prytty); 4. Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution Lipstick in Scarlett Spell ($34, Charlotte Tilbury); 5: Parasite (Photo courtesy of NEON); 6. Andy Warhol: From A to B and Back Again, (from $21, Art Institute).

What I’m Wearing

If you follow along with my blog, you know that I’m no stranger to a good two-piece. In fact, come summer, I’ve taken to wearing them rather religiously. In the colder months, however, this easy, breezy style (yes, I did just made a punny play on my own last name — sigh) gets relegated to the back of the closet. Enter the winterized take on the matching trend ($39.99, Prytty). Comprised of an oversized ribbed turtleneck and a matching, ankle-length skirt, this cozy two-piece manages to keep your body covered while still offering up a stylish, unique look. I’m still waiting for mine to arrive in the mail, but if it looks even the slightest bit like the photos, it’s all you’re likely to see me in for the next several months.

What I’m Putting On

Forget your Ruby Woo lipstick: This season, I’m all about Charlotte Tilbury’s limited-edition Scarlet Spell ($34, Charlotte Tilbury). After years spent searching high and low for a perfectly edgy berry shade, I’ve finally found “the one:” Not too dark and not too light, it’s just right for my super pale, near see-through complexion. Miraculously, this ultra-flattering hue somehow manages to look stunning on every other skin tone, too, from the über-fair maidens such as myself to those on the completely opposite end of the spectrum. Though it’s currently sold out, you can sign up for email notifications that will alert you when it’s back in stock. (Trust me: It’s worth the wait.)

What I’m Watching

Every year around this time, Kevin and I watch as many Oscar-nominated flicks as we can before the big night rolls around. While we’re usually baffled at how some of them even made it onto the ballot list, there’s one movie that’s up for a golden statue in 2020 that we both agreed deserves all of its accolades and then some: Parasite. Yes, it has subtitles, but this film also has enough unexpected twists and turns to make it totally worth it. Centered on a lower-class Korean family whose luck begins to change when their son lands a job as a tutor for a super-rich family, it’s funny, dark, and poignant, all rolled into one. Each member of the clan eventually schemes their way into a position within the household, but their actions have serious — and surprising — consequences. Not only did this gem of a movie keep me on the edge of my seat, it had a completely unique premise (enough with the reboots, already, people!). As a true thinking movie, it also left me to ponder its themes of classism, family, and deceit long after the credits had begun to roll.

Between writing up a storm for work and traipsing all over the city in an effort to get my step count up, I haven’t been doing a whole lot of shopping as of late — you know, apart from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale and the adorable two-piece Sunday Best floral set I finally pulled the trigger on, that is. I have come across plenty of finds this month that have left me feeling plenty inspired, however.

From the rollercoaster of a emotions that was Taylor Jenkins Reids’ latest New York Times bestselling novel to the über-creative works of Oddie Art and Eliza Sidney, there’s never a shortage of artistic brilliance just waiting to be discovered in this big wide world of ours.

The below list constitutes just a few examples I was lucky enough to stumble upon in July — here’s to hoping they’ll make you feel something, as well!

Please note: This post may contain affiliate links

1. Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid: We’re smack dab in the middle of summer — a.k.a. beach read season! I just finished this little guilty pleasure, courtesy of Reese Witherspoon’s book club, Hello Sunshine, (so very basic of me, I know), and while it initially grated my nerves with its contrived “rock star” personas — my boyfriend is a real live musician, after all — it grew on me about halfway through once author Reids’ inspiration became all-too-apparent. This tale of a multi-talented-yet-fully-dysfunctional group whose fame grows exponentially once their personal entanglements with one another begin to seep into their work — particularly with regard to its lead vocalists, Billy Dunne and Daisy Jones — could only be a fictionalized rehashing of Fleetwood Mac. Once I realized that Billy was basically Lindsey Buckingham and Daisy was more or less Miss Stevie Nicks — at least as far as the onstage love scenes went (a fact Jenkins Reid herself cops to, of sorts) — it became far more enjoyable of a read. Think of this as an Almost Famous in book form, if you will. My favorite line? “I think you have to have faith in people before they earn it. Otherwise it’s not faith, right?”

2. Oddie Art Monster Series: I’ve been a big fan of my pal Aly Jados’ art brand, Oddie Art, for some time now — girl has some serious talent — but she truly outdid herself with her new “monster series.” Done in her signature colorful, pop art style, she not only recreated some of the most famous ghouls and goblins throughout history (Frankenstein, Dracula, gangs’ all here!), she gave each piece an added layer of depth by painting words that characterize her creatures (freak, reject, misfit, savage, ect.) onto their backgrounds. The result is a stunning, thought-provoking display that any art collector would be lucky to house.

3. Bug Bite Thing Suction Tool ($10): I’m gonna be honest: I haven’t *actually* tried this one yet, but I’m so excited about its premise, I felt it would be a godd*mn crime not to share. Basically, this little do-dad claims to suck all the poison left behind by those pesky little mosquitoes (and bees. And wasps. And biting flies. And more) that have been feasting on your sweet, sweet skin all summer long, causing you to itch like heck. It also claims to reduce the swelling and irritation associated with their nibbles. I have no idea if it really works (Amazon votes yes!) but with bugs seemingly flocking to my body en masse this summer (Just me? No?), I’m willing to try just about anything! Let me put it this way: If it does, it’ll be the best $10 I’d ever spent.

4. Eliza Sidney’s Hand-Painted Bags: As one of my top 10 Instagram style crushes, I’m always being inspired by the looks Eliza Sidney puts together. She also has a hand in creating the wares she wears, however, (get it?) and I’ve been blown away by the pieces she’s been producing as of late in the accessories department. Case in point? This hand-painted Sacred Heart Tote ($73.50), for which I am actually living.

5. Chain Link Jewelry: I can’t remember if it was the August 2019 issue of Elle or Harper’s Bazaar that assured me chain link jewelry is about to be having a serious moment, but it’s no matter: The chunky look is BACK, y’all! This is fabulous news for a gal like me, who’s been waiting with bated breath for the delicate jewelry movement to go ahead and die already. Sure, I think it’s pretty on others and all, but really, it does nothing for my own personal style. The bold, chain link pieces set to take over this fall — like this gorgeous Mejuri Bold Chain Ring ($215, order one size down for best fit) — are far more up my alley. *Rubs hands together in glee.*

Let’s call a spade a spade: June has sucked some serious a** this year. Here in Chicago, we had (maybe!) one-and-a-half days of sun throughout the entire month — a month, mind you, that most count typically lump in with “summer,” particularly here, where the warm season is already far too fleeting.

Consequently, it was tough for me to pick “five things I’m digging.” Where I’d normally be lauding Daisy Dukes and summer blockbusters, I’ve been over here cursing every 55-degree day that passes (so, like, all of them) and trying to figure out which sweater to drag from the back of my closet — where it should be — in order to keep warm.

With the last couple of days registering above 70, I’m hopeful we’ve finally, (FINALLY!) turned a corner, so July should be back on track. (Fingers crossed!)

In the meantime, however, here are a few things that managed to spark some joy for me in in this godforsaken month.

1. Glitterlimes Jewelry: These little delights caught my eye while walking through the 2019 Sweets & Snacks Expo at McCormick Place in Chicago last month, where I was on hand to interview Jennie Garth about her upcoming show, BH90210, for Us Weekly. Based in New York City, designer Debbite Tuch creates this quirky-but-cute jewelry out of all kinds of *actual* food items by preserving the fruit (think limes, lemons and strawberries) before reinforcing them with a glittery resin to make wearable works of art. Nothing is off limits — candy and snacks, such as gummy bears, Cheetos and peppermint pieces are also transformed into necklaces, chokers and rings. I myself picked up a pair of kiss candy studs and a lemon bracelet, and I’ve never gotten so many compliments! They’re fun, they’re unique and they’re conversation-starters — everything I look for in a new piece.

2. Halsey, “Nightmare”: It’s no surprise that this is quickly became my new summer anthem — it was specifically designed to become every woman’s summer anthem. Unlike Taylor Swift (whom, as most of you know, I typically love dearly!), who worked her social beliefs into her new song, “You Need to Calm Down,” in the most contrived, commercial way possible, Halsey wrote this banger about her own raw feelings about what it’s like to be a badass chick in 2019. Wise beyond her young 24 years, Halsey touches on everything from her struggles with body image (“I’ve pinched my skin in between my two fingers / And wished I could cut some parts off with some scissors”) and her shitty ex-boyfriends to being told to “smile” by men on the street (barf), and honestly? It’s pretty great. I particularly like the lines, “‘Come on, little lady, give us a smile,’ / No, I ain’t got nothin’ to smile about / I got no one to smile for, I waited a while for / A moment to say I don’t owe you a goddamn thing.” *Slow clap.*

3. Viseart Petite Pro Palettes: I’m always on the lookout for the perfect eyeshadow palette (I’m partial to creamy-yet-luxe formulas with high-pigmentation). Thanks to my college friend Maria Chung, who has a serious obsession with makeup (for real, check out her Instagram —it’s basically swatch Heaven), I just may have found one in “it” brand of the moment, Viseart. While it’s definitely on the pricier side (a full-size palette will run you around $80), these little mini guys, dubbed Petite Pro, offer up a mix of eight matte and shimmery shades that check all of my shadow boxes. The mattes aren’t quite as impressive as the shimmers — they go on a bit chalkier than I would prefer — but they’re still plenty wearable, and the shimmery hues alone make them a worth-while purchase. I ordered the pictured Apricotine and will likely be going back for the other colors at some point.

4. Lauren Moshi Everything: If I could afford to have a closet made up solely of wares by L.A.-based designer Lauren Moshi, I absolutely would. Her edgy, hand-painted pieces are right up my alley — there’s even a section dedicated to all my favorite bands (yes, I WILL take that studded AC/DC sweatshirt — swoon)! Every piece is a work of art — literally — making it well worth the upscale price tags. If anyone reading this wants to donate to my lust for this brand so I can look perpetually awesome, I’m a size XS, thanks.

5. Waze Sesame Street Voices: I’m not sure I would’ve made it through this month without my directional app of choice’s decision to temporarily introduce Sesame Street characters as its voice. Do you have any idea how fun it is to hear Cookie Monster telling you to “turn left, nom nom nom?” while driving? I’ll give you a hint: VERY. And we’ve only scratched the surface! I’ve still got Oscar AND Elmo to test! The day they change these out will be a very, very sad day for me, indeed, friends.

I’m a hard chick to impress. My BFF Amy likes to joke that I’m the “original hipster,” as I tend to be rather apathetic about things most people collectively love (i.e. sports, Beyoncé, avocados), but the finds below have managed to do the impossible and nab my *full* seal of approval. Read on to find out why!

1. The Dirt: Let’s get one thing straight. I may write about pretty, polished things for a living (have you been following along with my articles on BRIDES?), but at heart, I’m an ’80s baby, through and through. There is nothing I love more than loud, rough and tumble hair metal bands, with my top three being Guns ‘N’ Roses, Mötley Crüe and Skid Row. In fact, if I had to listen to nothing else for the rest of my life but these three groups, I would be perfectly content (it’s pretty much all I listen to now anyway). I’ve been jamming to their tunes since I was a toddler — Vince Neil was my very first childhood crush! — and I’ve never quite recovered from my obsession with their music.

Naturally, when I heard that Netflix would be bringing their biopic to life, I was ridiculously giddy — if cautious. I figured there was no way the film could possibly live up to my expectations of a movie about my favorites. As it turns out, however, I was very, very wrong.

With all four band members (that’s Vince, Nikki Sixx, Mick Mars and Tommy Lee, for those of you that have been ruined by pop autotuned trash) on board as co-producers for the film, it was, in a word, PERFECT.

The costumes were so dead-on balls accurate (to quote Marisa Tomei from My Cousin Vinny — another favorite!) that I literally felt like I was reliving my youth. I laughed. I cried! I relished every single second.

While I can’t promise you’ll have *quite* the same religious experience that I did reliving the boys’ wild times on the Sunset Strip as they took over the world with their tunes — all the while struggling with everything from death and drug addiction to divorce and health issues — I can promise you’ll be highly, highly entertained — which is more than I can say for most movies of 2018, TBH. *Shrugs*

2. Zara Suede-Look Coat ($50): Since my new spring coat was such a hit on Instagram, I figured I’d fill you all in on the fact that not only is it still available, it’s affordable AF! I came across this gem during a recent stroll through Zara and it’s quickly become one of my favorite purchases to date. The faux suede feels super luxurious, the blush pink hue is right on trend and it gives you an instant air of poshness that far exceeds it’s $50 price tag. Oh. And did I mention it also comes in black or tan?

3. Hawley Shoffner: Hawley Shoffner is, without a doubt, one of the most badass, creative people I’ve ever met. For starters, she’s got the type of voice that makes you stop and stare to hear it — particularly since her range includes some wickedly unexpected low notes unlike anything you’ve ever heard (see: “Big Old Bloody Thing“). She also just so happens to write her own killer tunes (“Haunts” is my absolutely JAM) and play guitar. And the ukulele. And the piano. And the accordion!

Throw in a fashion sense that rivals Debbie Harry’s in her heyday, and you’ve got all the makings of a godd*mn superstar — which is pretty much exactly what you’ll find yourself in the presence of anytime you’re lucky enough to catch her onstage. Though I’m basically in awe of my friend 24/7, I’m making her my April pick in honor of her birthday — and because she’s the best!

4. A Secret History of Witches by Louisa Morgan: So far this year, my reading list has included The Nix by Nathan Hill, The Sun Is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon and The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. While all were OK (the first being the best of the lot), it wasn’t until I cracked into this sucker open that I was really and truly good and hooked. Perhaps it’s the subject matter (I’ve always loved a good witch story!) or the intermittent use of French, which I am proud to say I understand perfectly via written word (speaking it is another story entirely!), but it definitely has me captivated.

The novel follows a line of witches as they pass down their power through the generations. Though their stories each more or less begin the same, with a mother teaching the craft to her daughter, the journeys each pair encounter — and the fates that await them — couldn’t be more different. Two very enthusiastic thumbs up!

5. Olay Daily Cleansing Cloths ($7): Rarely, if ever, am I blown away by a makeup sample from a magazine (like I can *really* tell if that pinky nail full of foundation is any good or not!), but these guys were a pleasant surprise. If you’ve a frequent reader of the blog, you already know that I’m not the most consistent with my skin care routine (gulp), and these little babies, which double as a makeup remover and a toner, encourage good skincare habits before bed as much as humanly possible. At $7 bucks for a worth of cloths, it’s not an unmaintainable habit you won’t be able to afford the upkeep on, either.

Bonus Bonanza: I was also pretty impressed with the brand’s Eyes Brightening Eye Cream — while I’m not sure it did much for my fine lines or wrinkles, the caffeine found within gave me a tingling sensation when applied that FELT like it was doing something, which, I’ll take it. I figure if I can feel it, it must be working on at least some level … right!?

What do you think of this month’s picks? Tell me in the comments below!

Xo, Nicole

Yeah, yeah, I’m well aware February is swiftly coming to a close, but hey, it’s better late than never for a roundup of all my favorite things things, right? Between writing my ass off at work, finally (FINALLY!) finishing up a like, 800 page novel (Nathan Groff’s The Nix really could’ve used an editor) and catching up on all the Oscars flicks I actually cared to see (so, A Star is Born) it’s been a busy, busy month. I still found (some!) time to stop and enjoy the proverbial flowers, however, with a few small excitements and discoveries.

Read up on my faves for February below!

1. AWE-Inspired Goddess Coin Necklaces ($170 to $200): I’m not the only one that’s desperate for one of these coin-shaped necklaces — practically everyone in Hollywood already has one, from Sarah Hyland to Sophia Bush and Kesha. Engraved with seven inspiring women throughout history (Medusa, Mulan, Cleopatra, Joan of Arc, Athena, Sojourner Truth and Susan B. Anthony), you can take a short quiz to find out which babe you’re most like (was there any doubt I’d be mother*cking Medusa?), then choose your metal (14K yellow gold vermeil or solid sterling silver) for a personal little daily reminder of just how much of a sparkplug you really are.

2. HUM Nutrition Pills ($10 to $40): I’ve been super into supplements in general as of late after falling into the rabbit hole that is my high school friend Jessica Spiers’ YouTube channel (I’m suddenly desperate to know what Hawaiian Spirulina can do for me, so thank you for that!) and gave the Beauty ZzZZ pills a go for one of my growing roster of writing clients (read my full review here). Based on the results, I’d definitely be willing to try the rest of this brand’s line-up. This company has a supplement for just about everything, from air toxins to anxiety, and are gluten and GMO-free to boot. They also come in super cute packaging, making it fun and easier (for me at least!) to remember to take them: a must for reaping maximum supplemental benefits!

3. The Interrupters: I discovered this badass quartet on accident while researching bands for a piece on 2019 music festivals (stay tuned!) and fell in love almost instantly. One part punk rock, one part ska (think a slightly more hardcore ‘90s No Doubt), they’ve been on the scene for some time now, but I dig their more recent tunes most — “She’s Kerosene” from their 2018 album release Fight the Good Fight is the track that got me hook, line and sinker. Give me this over Ariana Grande and Travis Scott (or whoever else the kids are listening to these days) any f*cking day of the week!

4. Nest Grapefruit & Verbana Lip Balm SPF 15 ($16): I occasionally still receive samples from companies who haven’t gotten the memo that I’ve moved on from Brit + Co, and most of it turns out to be junk, but Nest (yes, the candle company)’s new bodycare line — specifically its lip balm — was a pleasant surprise. I love that it’s shaped like a lipstick, it’s not too strongly scented (unlike some of the brand’s other products) and it’s actually super moisturizing! It’s also got a bit of SPF to keep that pout sun-damage free. All in all, it quickly replaced my other, more expensive Fresh balms as a fave in my chapped lip arsenal.

5. Velvet Buzzsaw: Sure, it left a ridiculous amount of holes in its plotline (why didn’t the paintings kill Josephina right off the bat? What the F*CK was the backstory with Rhodora and her band? Inquiring minds want to know!), but honestly, I was so enchanted with its artsy vibe (can I please have Rene Russo’s edge/wardrobe in another life?) and unique premise that I couldn’t help but be captivated from the start of this film to its finish. It certainly held my interest more than Russian Doll has managed to four episodes in — I try guys, but what can I say? I don’t “get” pop culture hits — I’m also still trying to get into The Handmaid’s Tale after half a season, but honestly? It bores me to tears. *Insert shrug emoji*

It’s finally happened — we made it through 2018! After the dumpster fire that’s been the last 365 days (at least on my end) I’m looking forward to sunnier days ahead in 2019. And why not? There’s much to be excited about! (For me, it’s namely the release of Mötley Crüe’s The Dirt on Netflix in March and The Lion King in July, but that’s neither here nor there — we’re focusing on the now.)

Below, find five things I’m excited about for the month of January in fashion, books, food, movies and music. Who knows? Maybe you’ll like ‘em too!

1. Valfré’s Zodiac Collection ($12 to $60): I’ve been following artist lse Valfré’s brand Valfré for some time now — her bold, unique graphics and retro designs never fail to pique my interest — but the zodiac collection the shop has created for its five-year anniversary just might be my favorite yet. Its newest wares, which are set to drop on January 8, feature sassy pinup-cartoons for each horoscope sign in the form of pins, a calendar and tees with corresponding descriptions on the back, which, if you ask me, are worth every penny.

2. Zen As F*ck: A Journal for Practicing the Mindful Art of Not Giving a Sh*t ($10): This book isn’t new, per se, having launched last March, but with a brand new year upon us, there’s never been a better time to embrace the frank and hilarious lessons found within. I didn’t even need to journal to find the joy in this collection of affirmations, which was clearly penned by my literary soulmate, as colorful phrases such as, “Today is your f*cking day!” and “Shine on, mother*cker,” abound.

3. Petit Chocolat Wine: My Uncle Craig and his wife Teanna changed my life this Christmas by introducing me to Petit Chocolat. Normally, I’m not too keen on dessert wines, but after just one sip of this chocolate-y delight, I was head over heels. It’s smooth. It’s decadent. It’s roughly $6 at Aldi. Honestly, what more could you ask for? Aside from year-round sales, that is — according to my uncle, this bad boy’s only around in the winter months, so I strongly advise picking up a bottle while the getting’s still good!

4. Dumplin’: While everyone else is busy raving over Birdbox (which, for the record, was OK at best, people!), I’ve been over here fangirling over Netflix’s other, ACTUAL must-see, Dumplin’. Maybe it was the Dolly Parton-heavy soundtrack, which sparked in me a renewed appreciation for the 9 to 5 legend (side note: I recall being outraged as a child that my dad had the audacity to say that Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” was better than the original upon its 1992 release), or maybe it was my overwhelming joy at seeing an original, lighthearted film that was neither a reboot nor superhero-related for the first time in, I don’t know, AGES, but I fell for this flick, hard. Dumplin‘s spunky group of misfits reminding me to “be you / remember who you are / embrace yourself / yada yada ” was exactly what I needed to kick off this next trip around the sun. In short? It was “two very enthusiastic thumbs up. Fine holiday fun.”

5. Ganser: My first show of 2019, Ian’s Party at Subterranean, was a success. Not only did I get to see my extremely talented pal Hawley Shoffner rock out (do yourself a favor and check out her out if you haven’t already — you’ll thank me!), I discovered another new favorite in the process. Chicago-based four-piece Ganser (who have apparently been on the scene since 2014 while I’ve been living under . some rock) managed to capture my attention like a musical newcomer hasn’t been able to in quite some time. Tracks like “Avoidance” take me back to an earlier, magical era when badass babes like Belly’s Tanya Donelly, Courtney Love and Shirley Manson ruled the world with the same effortless coolness vocalists Nadia Garofalo and Alicia Gaines exude on stage now and I love every second of it.

And with that, I leave you all with my new motto for 2019, coined by Christian Bale at the Golden Globes when he joked about his inspiration for playing Dick Cheney in Vice: “Thank you to Satan for giving me inspiration for playing this role.”

Happy New Year!

Tell me what you’re digging this month in the comments below!

I know, I know — we haven’t even hit Thanksgiving yet, and already, we’re onto Christmas! While I do NOT condone putting up your tree before you’ve even carved your turkey, Target has weakened my resolve to get a jumpstart on the giving season with the release of its holiday lookbook. I mean … never hurts to look … right?

Look I did, and now, I’m passing the joy onto you with 25 things you need from its offerings — my own “25 Days of Target,” if you will. Behold all the holiday cheer below!
